Hi all... anyone else had issues with bonnet corrosion on circa 2016 Mustangs?? Noticed this (in image) a couple of months ago.

Took it to independent Bodyshop who suggested paint defect. Local Ford dealer didn’t want anything to do with it (‘sorry mate... out of warranty’) and in fact wouldn’t even look at it.

I complained to Ford Customer Relations who offered to make a goodwill contribution to repair once I had it estimated by Ford Approved Bodyshop.

Ford Approved Bodyshop reported the defect was down to bonnet corrosion from defective paint job at manufacture. Recommended whole new bonnet (£3k) of which cost is covered in full on corrosion warranty of 5 years !! Thanks Ford

Had the same issue with my previous 2017 Mustang. Ford said to go away. Sold the car.

Yep, my Oct ‘16 build had this. Apparently contamination when the bonnets were going through the rollers in the factory. I got a new bonnet badly painted under warranty; after some polite discussions with the dealer (not a FordStore) it was repainted to my satisfaction.

My car had one side bubbling up under the paint; the guy at the Ford dealer mentioned that another chap had both sides go. Seems it’s always at the leading edge. Common issue on cars of this age.

I have the same problem with my2017 GT. I didn’t wait until I was close to the end of warranty and reported it to my local Ford Bodyshop on 03:01.20.
Guess what nearly 10 months later I am wait for a resolution.
Now I know the Chinese Flu has disrupted things but the service from my dealer is pretty appalling.Nothing in the current govt. regulations prohibits phone calls or e mails!!

I can’t escalate it any higher in the dealership as it’s the dealer principal who is (not) handling it. I even gave them a copy of the Ford TSB they covers the corrosion issue!

I will contact them again tomorrow a day before it goes out of warranty.

I got nowhere at all with my local dealership... in fact they flat out refused to even look at it as ‘the warranty wouldn’t cover it’. I went straight to Ford Customer relations and complained and they have been very helpful (although I don’t think they expected a £3k bill for a new bonnet) !!
They guy at the Ford Approved Bodyshop looked at the bubbling paint and immediately diagnosed corrosion from manufacture and said a respray would only delay more corrosion coming through....hence a whole new bonnet. Hope you get sorted

By the way... you’ve got a 5 year warranty on corrosion !!

Thanks Browny will keep you posted with developments.
The longer anti perforation warranty can be an issue if the annual paint inspections haven’t been done and recorded and it can be argued that corrosion is not the same as perforation.

Crucially as there is a TSB on it confirms that this is a problem acknowledged by the manufacturer even if many dealers are unaware.

A question I have asked before is are any 2018 onwards facelift cars showing the same problem?

As I have had no replies perhaps this confirms 2018 onwards cars are ok and they have finally fixed the problem ?

All aluminium panels are at risk of this not just Ford cars. Jaguar had a real problem with doors on the XK. It is often due to contamination of the paint with steel particles from the factory or very small paint chips. Aluminium 'caps' off the surface with Aluminium Oxide so it doesn't just keep rotting like steel but once it is significant like that it will never be possible to repair.

its not contamination its sympathetic anodisation from incorrectly isolated differing metals.
its a full bonnet replacement, its covered under ford warranty, and its a known issue.

If you raise it with ford head office it should get sorted.

You need to have two differing metals hence the source can be contamination or direct connection of differing metals within the structure. Aluminium body panels contaminated with even microscopic amounts of steel will do this. That is why bodyshops repairing aluminium panels have to be so careful.

Ford admitted to contamination issues a while ago:

In 2004 the manufacturer sent dealers a technical service bulletin (TSB) about bubbling and blistering under the paint on aluminum body panels due to "iron contamination of the aluminum panel".

The TSB goes on to say that "testing has revealed that the aluminum corrosion was caused by iron particles working their way into the aluminum body part, prior to it being painted."

Providing you’ve got the corrosion stamps, should be covered. Go to a different Ford gaRage. Just had my bonnet and boot lid done. About 4K in total

Saw this thread and decided to check mine, late 2016 EcoBoost (in a 2017 white platinum colour somehow). Have minor bubbling on edges of both sides, and couple other weird under the paint issues in other places. Had the car used last December so don't know of any paint checks. Don't really wanna get into any debates with bodyshops but just wouldn't like it to get worse either as it's not really all that noticable.

(Rust spots are in the boot drainage recess).

After going in for the bonnet replacement, I then found proper rust in the seams of the boot lid (it's steel). I felt a bit weird going in again but the paintshop guy said straight away - "it's like the old Mondeo's". My local Ford paint shop had lost count of Mustang bonnets, F150 wings and Mondeo doors he'd done over the years.

I’d say it’s definitely worth starting the process of asking questions with Ford as the bubbling looks very similar to what I had on the offside leading edge of the bonnet. The paint checks should be stamped in your service book if they have done them (apparently free but it’s the customer responsibility to ask for them !!). I’m not an expert on corrosion but I suspect it will continue and get worse. I’ve just collected mine from having a full bonnet replacement done under Corrosion Warranty (5yr).
