I agree that the e92 is robust for how they are used. And I wouldn't have even said a bad word, because I know that all cars will break down, and it's just the matter of time. It's the fact that it is ridiculously expensive to fix any issues in a BMW. This is the problem. You have mentioned a Focus, the thing is, to repair the same issue in the Focus, and to repair it in the BMW (not even an M) the price is as different as ice and fire. BMW knows that the cars break down, they charge large amounts of money and make a profit. As for the Ecoboost, I have said it before, and I'll say it now, I knew from the beginning that it was going to be a problem (head gasket and some other issues). Which is part of the reason why I decided on a proven V6. Turbo as fun as it is, it's just another thing that can break. The way I think it should be is- As long as you make your product with truly high quality parts that last longer than competitor's, I can care less as to how much you charge for repairs, but the thing is that neither BMW nor Mercedes use truly high quality parts like they used to up until early 90s, but charge insane money for repairs. Labor charges are funny too, the same mechanic will fix a Honda for example for $80 per hour, and will fix a BMW for $120 an hour, and I don't see any reason to do this, a car is a car, and it's not like that same mechanic just got more skills because he gets $40 or however more per hour of labor.First off most new cars today being as sophisticated as they are will start having issues when you start hitting 100k miles. Hell my simple as hell 2007 Ford Focus went to hell and a hen basket after just 70k miles. Between waterpumps, alternator and on to a bad powersteering pump all at or near 70k miles. My buddy had a 2008 Mustang GT500 that was a total mess after 60k miles, he sold it for a Focus ST.
Regarding the E92 M3 yes they have some issues, the one that scares me the most is that it seems 1.5% of the engines out there may have to tight of clearances with the rod bearings and the engines are failing. It seems that changing out rodbearings at a cost of $2k is going to become a maintenance issue. However, BMW has covered a lot of these engines post warranty as long as the car wasn't supercharged or heavily tuned.
The E92 M3s have turned out to be very robust especially when you consider how hard most of these cars are being driven. The DCT issue is pretty much solved as it was a software issue, I went with a 6 MT as I too am afraid of what it would cost to repair when it is finally necessary to replace these things, but there are DCT cars now that are well past 100k miles with no issues at all and a few are supercharged at 700+rwhp and the trannies are surviving. Lets see Ford comeout with a DCT then see how well they do.
You don't think Ford is going to have issues with their Ecoboost cars down the line...I wouldn't hold your breath.
I think this is an issue from a lot of new cars that are released, the more complex they get the more issues you are going to have.
BTW, in this forum go to the TSB, maintenance sub forum and check all the issues with the S550, a car thats only been out for less than a year.
We can agree that we disagree, I can only go on my own experiences. End of thread jack..OP I would go with the S550 over a RCF.
