2.5" vs 3.0" Catback fitment

This is not about a catback making power - just a simple fitment question (I don't have my car quite yet).

How can catbacks be made in both 2.5 and 3 inch to connect to the stock setup ? What's the actual spot where they connect in terms of size? I'm assuming it has to be 2.5 or the 2.5s couldn't bolt up.

Do the 3 inch systems just have a 2.5 opening at the connection then open up to 3 immediately from there?

catbacks that attach to factory headers step down to 2.whatever, yes.

Every catback that connects to the stock connection is 2.25"

Yep, the Gibson is 3". Reduced to bolt up up to the factory piping. Perfect fit. Stock appeared to be 2.25".
