I like your over-thinking, I am the same way. I would love to hear your thoughts on this; I have posted this question before but have not had anyone attempt to answer it.
Here are my thoughts on that.
IF you have the 3.73 gears AND you cruise on the highway/and or autocross, moving up slightly to a 285/40 19 wheel/tire (from stock 275/40 R in the PP) is basically a 0.3 inch in diameter increase. It will have hardly any effect, however, it just might allow you to hit 60 mph without the dreaded shift to 3rd a PP car has. A lot of folks say the 3.55's are best for this car anyway, so you will probably end up with a 3.65-3.7.

It's basically negligible.

Personally, the slightly taller setup is preferable for all the reasons I mentioned in my prior post, but also, I wouldnt mind slightly longer gearing. 3.73 is unnecessary in this powerful engine and I dont like the 3rd shift required to hit 60.

OTOH, moving DOWN to a 285/35 19 (diameter 26.9) is basically taking off nearly an inch of diameter. That is a lot and will increase highway rpm and numbers of shifts required. It will also make you odometer read higher than usual.

But, it depends on what gears you have...

I went from stock 19" rims to aftermarket 20", and I don't notice any notable increase in harshness from the switch. 18" to 19/20" would probably be a fairly big difference though.

I will be getting 20's soon due to having many tire options.

I went from 18s to 20s.........on HWY's, normal paved streets, etc, car rides basically just as smooth. Only time you notice a "harsher" ride would be on a brick / gravel road or something of the like. You guys who felt your whole car vibrating must have had crappy wheels and/or even crappier tires

That's the biggest thing I've noticed, a lot more tire options for 20's. I don't think 1" in size would make that big of a difference, right??

Of course it would..........according to Schu that 1" now makes it a "wagon wheel"!!

My 2015 was a GTPP, hence 19's., 3.73's I thought the ride was quite and comfortable on the highway.

My new 2016 GT non PP has the OEM 20". Both had/have the Pirelli P zero's.

Now...same tire pressure, same highway cruizing speed, the 20" have noticeably more NVH. I'm just saying IMO!

I'll of course be keeping my 20" for a AS winter tire. When I buy after market wheels and tires for handling and ride quality they will be 19".

Not the same car, but when I went from 19" to 20" in my 2006 E55 AMG the NVH was slightly worse, but noticeable. I regretted the change. IMO and according to my understanding a wider tire will have a more positive effect on handling, a bigger diameter wheel not so much.
