Wanted to see what weight oil everyone is using. I have a whipple stage2. Was think about going with a good 5w 30 or 5w 40. I'm also gonna add cera tec. As I'm sure you all know about the tick.

Thanks
Joe

doesnt whipple recommend 5w50? Oil debate is huge and basically unsolved. I would look into one of the oil additives. coyote car guy on yotube has a stage 1 whipple and some decent info

Yeah I'm gonna add Cera Tec. Yes but they recommend motocraft 5w 50. So I was seeing if with higher quality oil people are running less weight.

Whipple states 5w50. I use Mobile 1. Considering Ceratec. Al did a good job with his video and likes Power Up but it seems Ceratec has a little more positive reviews and testing results if you compare the two.

The bigger question, did you put in aftermarket OPG and sprocket while in there?

I have asked before but no one answered, anybody got the tick with new OPG? So far I don't....

upgraded OPG and using straight oil with no additive? i dont see what affect that would have on the tick.. i was debating the powerup for next time around. i think ceratec is just easier to get so seems to be popular.
currently i am using 5w30 but was looking at going 5w40 t6 rotella.

My theory on the aftermarket OPG is that they are machined from billet stock and the OEM OPG are cast then maybe machined. The aftermarket theoretically would be tighter tolerances.

There was a thread a while back that 5w20 could be cavitation caused the oil starvation. A better OPG may help prevent that.

Just a theory mind you but have not heard of a an engine with aftermarket OPG and tick. That is when the OPG is installed prior to ticking.....

Of course now will hear from them all......:)

its the same OPG as previous. i dont imagine OPG causing a bottom end tick. the billet gear i believe are made to the same spec as the factory ones. but i guess we would have to wait for someone who has the tick to replace them and see if it goes away lol

You are missing the point. An aftermarket OPG will not get rid of the tick. It may help prevent it if indeed an oil cavitation/starvation related issue...

how though? if its made to the same specs as the factory one the only difference is that its billet. i dont see it providing any more oil flow

Who ever said they are made to the same specs?

Tighter tolerance from the billet machining process would potentially reflect in smaller variation in oil flow characteristics from unit to unit, especially at lower RPM.

Remember, the cost from Ford for an OPG replacement(no housing) is like $50. The aftermarket cost is $300. The cost difference is not strictly volume. The cheaper part, to get those price points, must have greater production yield therefore more generous tolerances and lower cost materials, i.e. powered metal vs billet aluminum.

we;; ya billet cost more but who says they are made to different specs?the oil pump produces plenty of flow and is the same used in previous. this would have been an issue before the 18 if it was OPG related.

I have the opg/cg in my garage. But no I'm not putting them in when I get the car. I'm gonna do 1000 miles, Weather and roads permitting.then Putting the whipple on, oil change and Ceratec. Then tuck away and bring back out around April. Drive till November or so. If everything is good then over next winter I'll do kooks, PBD tune and OPG/CG. I'm not doing anything extra at first. Because if this motor is failing in an kinda way I'm not playing around with taking the whipple off to see if ford will give a new motor. I'm just gonna get a MPR short block and be done with it.

Got it.

I went the opposite way. Had the OPG / CG on at 11 miles. Drove the car to 1974 miles then Whipple time. So far so good, except for winter.

The previous “tick” is not the same as the current bottom end tap/ knock
