There was a shortage in 2018 or thereabouts, I remember by fall of that year bitcoin crashed and mining gpu's were stupid cheap. Hopefully that happens again, but ethereum are taking their sweet ass time going to proof of stake. The biggest problem with the shortage is because of bitcoin mining. There really wasn't any issues with getting a card before that was a thing. The demand has only gone up and also gaming has increased because of the lockdowns and 'stay at home' vibe thats been going on, but its not really gaming itself thats the problem.
You do bring up a good point, I never looked into it but I wonder when it will be considered a national security problem when new high tech military equipment can't actually be produced or replaced because of the shortages. I wonder if the defense industry has a solid grip on their supply line, they always have Washington watching their back so I imagine if things get worse it won't be a problem.
