Comming from a Nitrous FBO 6r80 to the 10r80 platform. I was trying to find out more information on why people tune out 7th gear and is it necessary tuning out 7th gear being FBO? Also what is the main causes of a p061a code. Car gets thrown into limp mode while in my mode (exhaust set to track everything else is set to normal) but is fine in every other mode in half throttle / WOT pulls / normal driving. Trying to narrow down the issue. Car is a 2022 Gt 7400 miles

I don’t think anyone is tuning out 7th on anything short of 900 rwhp. It would be silly on an fbo na setup.

That said , I don’t fully understand the issue with 7th to begin with. There are 6 forward clutches in the 10r80 and none of them are unique to 7th gear. 7th gear engages c, d, e, and f clutch. 6th engages d, e, and f (also a). 2nd through 5th engage c clutch et al. So what’s special about 7th that makes it lack holding?

Sidetrack to the OP thread, but @engineermike do you know why the 10r80 shifts at 6800 instead of redline? Auto or manual mode, the behavior is the same. I discovered this on track a few years ago. Haven't come across a forum discussion about it.

The shift points are set in the tune and there are lots of possible causes. It is peculiar that it upshifts at 6800 in manual mode though. The mustangs are usually programmed to bang the limiter rather than upshift in SST.

It hits the rev limiter in either mode.
When in manual mode, I have to shift at 6800 to avoid the limiter.
When in auto mode, it automatically shifts at 6800.

Maybe it does it in 7th gear too, but I have never been over 130mph on track, so I have never reached that situation.

I think there was a Roush TSB about this, but I'm not sure if there is one from Ford.

I pulled a random 2020 GT stock tune.

Soft limiter is 7350 rpm.
Hard limiter is 7500 rpm.
OSS-based shift points in base, sport, and drag mode are set too high to matter.
Engine rpm based shift points are the same for base, sport, and drag and are set at:
1-4 - 7300 rpm
5th - 7250
6th - 6700
7th - 6700

There is an altitude shiftmap modifier that uses 6500-6800 rpm depending on gear, but I don't see the altitude breakpoint. Are you by chance at high altitude?

Thanks on the tuning! I do know that 7th is a 1:1 ratio

P061A is tire size or vacuum leaks in the intake system. Another poster here has also recently shared that he was using a cheap amazon phone USB charger plugged into his Mustang that was causing the issue as well so check for any accessories that you have plugged in.
