If the crack was at the bolt hole I could see you point. The crack is not at the bolt hole and actually closer to the oil pan.Was the engine bolted to a stand? and was it a specific stand for this engine or a universal stand. I have seen similar issues when engines are rotated on the stand and the improper mounting holes in the block were used.
Some later model engines are supported on the engine mount pads instead of the bell housing area.
I just attached a pictures from Tony Js turbo build and outlined the area I think you are showing and you can see there is not a lot of strength in this area if you hung the engine on a stand and turned it upside down or sideways.
