How to - OPG Replacment

How do I find the Ford service procedure for replacement of the OPG? Has anyone done this themselves? Are there any special tools required?

No to be a but if you are asking you probably shouldn't be doing it..

Why are you replacing yours?

Without looking it up, basically intake manifold, front cover, valve covers timing chains and probably oil pan have to come off. Definitely special tools as you then would have to one up all the cams chains and sprockets.

With the thought of adding boost I think it should be done. Even if i don't boost the engine it should be done. It is the week point. I have rebuilt many engines in the past with no problems.

If you're adding boost, then warranty is moot. Before boost though, if you haven't done any other performance mods, you should leave it alone just for warranty purposes.

That does not look that hard. Just time consuming.

Step 1. Buy OPG

Step 2. Google "speed shop near me"

Step 3. Look at reviews for said speed shop

Step 4. Make appointment with said speed shop

Step 5. Pray.


In all seriousness, replacing OPG's is a pretty meticulous thing. I've watched it kinda sorta done but wasn't hands on. Do you have feeler gauges?

For what?

I have done it on my GT. Not too hard. I have heard that with the 5.2 voodoo motor you have to drop the oil pan. Not sure though. Fyi.

is it different from the coyote install? sorry if dumb question

this was why i asked the difference, there's a bunch of guys that will literally be on standby to help you in the GT crowd. save ya all that labor and you learn in the process. i'm not looking forward to it, but i'd like to do it in the garage

If I remember right, I'm pretty sure you need to install the OPG with a spec'ed level of spacing in the housing which is very sensitive.

I just snapped in and made sure it moved freely. Used a little oil to lube it as well. Only hard part was accessing the rearward most screw that holds the oil pickup tube. That was on the GT coyote motor though. Not sure if the pickup is differant on the voodoo motor. I had heard that it is in some way and the oil pan had to be dropped. On the GT I did not take off the oil pan. check post #329 in link below.

Voodoo pickup is integral with the pan.
