I've been meaning to make a post about this for a while, but I keep forgetting until I change my oil, then I put it in the back of my mind and it's this whole viscous cycle, lol.

Anyways, I wanted to tell you all that the Motorcraft FL-400S oil filter is a direct replacement for our FL-910S. It's just under an 1/8" narrower (I'll show the specs below), but right at 3/4" longer.

In having this longer filter (more capacity), you have a larger surface area for filtering the oil, reduced pressure on the media filter, increased oil reservoir, and better filtration.

The FL-400S filters down to 20um @ 80% efficiency. The stock FL-910S filters down to 35um @ 50% efficiency. It's also worth noting that Purolator produces the stock filters, both of the aforementioned, for Ford.

I use the Motorcraft because they perform and are built very well, plus, they're easy to find (Walmart) for around $4/filter.

In regards to other filters, the Purolator PureOne filters get rave reviews and are tested at filtering down to 20um @ 99% efficiency. You can find them in the same size as the FL-400S too. I believe the PPO filter equivalent to the 400S is a PL20195, I think. It'd be best to double check that though as I'm going by memory on that one.

Filter specifications for comparison:

FL-400S:
Thread Inside Diameter (in.): 3/4"-16
Outside Diameter Top (in.): 2.98"
Outside Diameter Bottom (in.): 2.98"

FL-910S:
Thread Inside Diameter (in.):3/4"-16
Outside Diameter Top (in.):3.15"
Outside Diameter Bottom (in.):3.15"
Length (in.): 3.36"
Spin-On Filter:Yes
Bypass Valve:YES
Color:White
Burst Pressure (PSI): 250 PSI

Here's what it looks like (for those interested):

Damn Justin, you're a research machine! What about the WIX 51348, I've been using the Napa 1348 which is a replacement for that.Is the Motorcraft filter better?

Probably a stupid question, but:

Due to the larger size, should one expect the 400S hold a slightly larger volume, therefore leaving a little less overall volume within the motor? And if so, would you need to compensate for that or is the difference negligible?

WIX's website says their filter for the equivalent for the FL-400S filters down to 21 microns. It doesn't list the efficiency rate of that filter though. I'm at work now, but I'll try to do some more digging on it. I know people tend to think the factory stuff is crap, but the oil filters are actually good pieces for the price.

For the best filtering, the Purolator PureONE seems to be the best out there, especially for the price.

I just looked that up, VERY nice! If I looked up the right thing. I looked up the PurolatorONE. They say it filters down to 15 microns and 99% efficient.

If I found the correct one, their app guide says it is the PL22500 <- INCORRECT Wrong threads!!

Data
O.D. 2.98
Height 4.08
Relief Valve P.S.I. 15.5
Threads M22x1.5-6H
Type of Filter Spin-on
Anti-Drain Back Valve Yes

I think I'll switch to this. It's about the same size as the Motorcraft FL-400S.

I have been using the FL400s for the last two oil changes, without issues.

A filter with a M22 thread won't work, it will actually slip over the 3/4-16 thread the Ecoboost has.

My Ecoboost has had a FL400S filter since it's first oil change at 1k miles, that was 22k mikes ago.

FWIW, the FL910S filter was first spec by Chrysler back in the early 80s for the 2.2. I started using the FL400S filter back then.

The FL400S filter also allows for an even 6 qts of oil too.

Thanks for mentioning that! I meant to put that in my initial post. I felt like I was forgetting something but was in a rush and couldn't remember quick enough.

I've used the FL-400 in my Fusion since I got it in '13 and started using it on my Mustang the first oil change after I bought it. It's worked great and I always just dump the full 6 quarts in. :headbang:

I got a chance to cross-reference it on Purolator's website earlier. It is indeed the PL20195. Like dgc333 mentioned, the threads on the PL22500 won't match up.
