Idle Issue, car nearly keeps dying

Any ideas? By the time I had taken it to the dealership, service was closed. I'll have to go tomorrow. I have taken my car before to them with the same issue, without recordings, and they said they cant do anything unless they can see it happen. It doesn't happen often, maybe once every 2 weeks.

Thats the most extreme one i've ever seen...

Could be anything but there is a TSB out there for engine dying on decel apparently...not quite your issue but its similar.

My guess is something is going on with air flow monitoring...so MAF, 02 sensors or a potential hose undone in the system.

Odd thing though is that if it happens only once a week or so then it would have to be during certain ambient conditions like temps, weather, etc or its just a flat out PCM issue.

Is your car stock or has mods like an intake or aftermarket air filter?

Check for loose clamps on the intake. Make sure all your hoses into the air box is tight and not letting outside air sucked in from anywhere else other than the front of the car.

I haven't done any mods at all. My car is pretty new, haven't even got to the first oil change yet. I noticed a vacuum pop noise that comes from the engine bay when I turn off my car, but I don't see any loose air hose clamps, but thats just my eyes. I sometimes also hear a whistling noise from the intake as well, but still can't spot anything. I booked it in the dealer for Thursday. They again said if its not happening at the time its there, then there isn't much they can do. And I can't replicate things whenever I want, but I hope they can figure it out.

I'm assuming there is no Check Engine light on. Even so, there might be a trouble-code stored, which the dealer should be able to determine.

Theres no engine check light, and unfortunately no code popped up the last time this happened and I took it to the dealer. At that time they just left it at that.

I would bet good money that its a vacuum line thats come off. Look around in the engine bay for anything that appears to be disconnected.

Best way to check is with a can of carb cleaner .... propane may work as well. If you spray the carb cleaner around a vacuum leak, the engine will noticeably pick up speed. Take note of where you sprayed and look around for a cracked or disconnected hose.

The wildcard here though is he said it happens every few weeks and isnt consistent...:shrug:

It still regardless is a good check, and should/could be done if the dealership is going to do anything to help you.

My bad ... didn't see that part.

Considering its intermittent, I'd guess (#2) that you could have a bad sensor or harness shorting somewhere. Still a long shot since there are no codes .. I'm thinking a sensor issue would pop a code right?

Regardless, that RPM hunt pretty dramatic ... it reminds me of my 88 Saleen when I was having MAF sensor wash from the clutch fan after a procharger install. Was a bitch to diagnose.

Definitely will have a go at this regardless!

I do hope they treat this seriously unlike last time, since I have proof now. It seems like a safety concern especially if it gets worse.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Just got the car back. They said they couldn't do anything again because the issue was not occurring while the car was there. One of the employees even took it home for the night and brought it back with 125 km more on it for a test.

This is a serious issue because when I'm changing lanes or taking a left turn at a low speed the car shakes before accelerating, and it can possibly cause an accident if its not quick enough. I was just told to take it home, drive it, and if it comes up, take it to the dealer. But I'm afraid to drive it now since the last incident I had made the traffic stop until my car got back up on its feet.

I'm gonna keep it garaged and contact Ford customer service to see if they have any advice for me.

And to tell you the truth, after all my experiences with Ford, it seems like this will be my first and last Ford. Always had a Japanese before this.

Pull the spark plugs and check the gaps. Better yet change them to NGK 6510
