Keeping a long story short, I'm considering running my Tech Pack on a relatively open track: Watkins Glen. When I ran the car on a shorter tight course, I got into limp mode at 13, 10 and 7 minutes.
Can anyone who's run their car on on a similar open track share their experience with...
Overall, I think this has been a productive thread for you OP. Now, if I can be very forward, I suggest you start a new thread on "starter track cars." That is in no way a reflection on the GT 350, and if you positively, absolutely must have a corner carving V8 in your life--I know I did--then...
I don't want to derail the OP's thread, but at my last track event I drove 3 cars: my race prepped e36 M3 (2970 lbs race trim) producing just under 250 WHP, my GT350 and my buddies' race prepped e30 M3 (2540 lbs race trim) with an e36 s52 motor producing 255 WHP. By far the biggest grin factor...
Since you asked for opinions from a track-focused perspective, my suggestion is . . . neither the e92 nor the GT350.
Your comments suggest that you do not have extensive track experience. There is so much that you will need to learn about how to maintain and live with a car set up for and run...
I continue to read the threads about cooling issues and fixes because of my direct, personal interest, but I've generally stopped posting because the level of conversation just degrades in a ridiculous way. The mind set that those who purchased a Tech Pack were somehow negligent, uninformed or...
Yep. That one decision has had some big impacts. I also think that if the full cooler suite was an available option for the Tech Pack, 75+% of buyers / dealers would've checked that box, even at a $1500-$2500 upcharge.
This is the point that annoys me the most: the manufacturer put the tech and base cars in a corner by choosing to use a different transmission configuration. That wasn't an engineering decision, it was some type of "corporate" decision that makes no sense.
You'll get 10-12 minutes under typical HPDE track conditions and speeds. Those times will decrease with higher temps and consecutive sessions because of the residual heat build up.
Find a basic one-day event, get the car on track, flog it, grab some huge grins, and start researching cooling...
The overheat protection will limit the motor to 5K rpm. I think it also limits power in other ways since you can't do much more than 60 mph. I found that leaving the car in 4th gear was the most effective way to get off track once in limp mode.
I've found the supplied sensors to be accurate, at least reasonably so. The system does not report fractions, so its rounding up or down by some measure. That being said, I found less than a 1 lb psi differential between the sensors and my gauge, which I've calibrated against an accurate...
I wouldn't say there's anything "wrong" with the Gt350 dual spring setup. But, the springs do influence the clutch action and feel quite a bit, and creates some vagueness in feeling where the clutch engages. I left it stock for several months to give it a try, but ultimately decided that it...
Well, since we're in full-on thread derail mode (and I'll take some responsibility), I'll clarify that my comments on cooling (of which I've made many) are not about the car itself: which is awesome! I'm disappointed and frustrated in Ford's build choices. But, that's fodder for a different...
You're waiting for a comment that limp mode will occur when operating under normal track conditions? Is that even a serious statement? If you want to take the position that 60-70 mph for short periods in wet / cold weather is performance on a track, well, have at it I guess. I'm just sorry...
There is a thread on another forum by an owner who installed that duct, and had to modify the belly pan for installation. I don't recall if he had to modify any hardware or mounting points also, nor have I gone back to that thread to see if there are any performance updates.
As a general idea...
You're going to get the limp mode, the question is when. Some good advice already: work the brakes more than the engine and maybe, just maybe, you can squeak out a 15 minute learning session. That won't really suck for a first event. Use the situation to develop good track awareness, be aware...
