I have the old style and have reused the factory one since new
I think part of the reasoning of replacing the plug is to avoid the risk of breaking the retaining tab(s) after repeated servicing? I cringe every time I see those tabs bend during installation and removal, even on new plugs.

KZ how did I conclude that? Ask FORD why they switched back to the steel pan. I will bet even money FORD lost a lot of money due to failure or the plastic crap and customer complaints. A large company DOES NOT change back unless they are losing money.
Maybe the old contract was up at the end of the s550 run and they negotiated with another supplier? Some of those composite materials aren't exactly cheap anyway.

Intake manifold, cam covers, oil pan. I like the idea of losing that weight at the front. I also like durability though too. I think if there was a real problem we'd hear about it more often, or at all. (I never have. *knock on wood*)

I have two vehicles with the plastic oil pan and the old style plug, a 2016 Edge with the 2.7L and the 2019 Mustang with the 5.0L. I've done 14 oil changes on the Edge and 5 on the Mustang without buying a new plug or replacing the o-ring. Both are parked on a concrete floor and neither have ever leaked. I do agree removing the plug is like a firehose of scalding hot oil coming out so anything would be an improvement over that.

I recall reading the move back to the metal pan was to quiet down the typewriter tick.

I think a lot of modern automotive design is planned obsolescence. I don't like it. It makes me feel like their customers are victims of the company's design efforts.

I prefer to buy products from companies that build the best they can. Simple, easy to repair, long lasting.
