There was a design flaw in the 2015 and 2016 air conditioning system for the S550 Mustang and the problem was addressed in the 2017 and newer models so the parts that you buy on the open market today reflect those engineering changes.

Unfortunately if you're affected by it and out of warranty you'll end up doing the repairs.

I need to figure out how to post a link and I'll put up the repair instructions for the complete system so that you can use whatever parts of the repair procedures necessary for your particular application he had made their to to get them up

Here is a complete set of repair instructions for the A/C System as published by Ford for the S550 series of Mustangs. Hopefully it will help the ones who are willing to do their own repairs save some money in the process.

If you need a hard copy, click the pop out icon. The file will open in a new window with a print option.

Good Luck

Ford addressed the issue for the 17 model year and newer, but it is still to early to tell.

There hasn't been enough people who want to get involved. Roughly half the affected cars were repaired under warranty and others not covered absorbed the costs.

So at best I've been able to get detailed repair instructions posted to help the DIYer's.

I have chosen to repair the car myself as well for a DIY price with all new components for around $750.00.

Otherwise my car would still be out of commission.

Ford knows thats what most of us will do and aren't to forthright about helping those without warranty coverage.

In the end it was an endeavor in vain.

As a loyal Mustang owner, I have tolerated manufacturing short comings for a long time. Thru the years as Ford has produced each generation there were inherent problems with each series, the problems mainly easy to fix or tolerate.

My gripe is with the 2015 and 2016 Mustangs. Ford knows there is a manufacturer defect in the A/C Evaporator behind the dash, and if your like many owners, our Mustangs are weekend warriors. That being said, it take quite a while to clock real mileage on the odometer. So at four years old and 18,000, my A/C system went out. The repair estimate is upwards of $3,000.00. Being out of warranty, I have no other recourse but to get it fixed at my expense. Now I am able to make
the repairs myself at around a $1,000.00 in parts, but I shouldn't need to with only 18,000 miles.

I am curious how many other owners have faced this issue, whether under warranty or out of pocket.

I completely understand if it were a performance part damaged from aduse, but were are looking at life of the vehicle parts failure, that can get pretty expensive to repair.

Based on the feedback, it will be the basis to contact Ford to try and get a resolution to the issue. If Ford won't help, then I am willing to go thru the due diligence and push the issue. As loyal Ford customers we should not have to pay the price for a manufacturing defect.

Your support might get this fixed, because if you haven't experienced the problem yet, wait for the bill when you are out of warranty. 18,000 miles really.

I would have to say negative. I have a 17' model and my Evaporator core went out at 22k miles. They performed the newest TSB at the time during the late summer of 2018 and its been rock solid since. Fingers crossed..

That's the driving factor in the labor cost at the dealer. For me I just don't trust the dealer to be as care in the disassembly and reassembly without causing unseen damage or omitting parts that are difficult to reinstall.

For me it was the lack of space and time. My dealership has a technician that works on every mustang that goes through there. I've met him, we've had a few conversations, and I trust him enough to do that kind of work. The evap core has been the only thing I haven't done myself. I'll roll 100k in the next few months.
