When are you guys doing your first oil change?
Reading some posts and blogs I've seen 3 opinions on this.
1. Some manufacturers recommend going the whole oil cycle because they include an additive that helps to collect the tiny metal break-in metal bits.
2. Go 1000 miles break-in and change the oil
3. Change it asap to what you feel is better.

When are you planning to change your oil?

Probably at 250-300 and again at 1k for me, then start regular cycles.

Unless someone changes my mind, I think I'll do 1,000 miles.
not sure if 1,000klm or 1,600klm for me since we use measurements that make sense ;)

I was planning on 3K miles for the first oil change, then 5K after that.

So the manual looks like it recommends every 5000 miles, but not to exceed 10000 miles.

1st... 100 miles
2nd... 1,000 miles
3rd... 5,000 miles
5,000 miles between oil changes.

one of my current 5.0's still runs strong after 260,000 miles and is still sealed from the factory... no smoke or leaks. (rear main seal doesn't count, they all leak...lol)

The factory oil also contains leak dye to aid in finding a leak if one pops up early...so I usually run the factory oil for 1000 miles or so. Then swap out for ford motorcraft full synthetic...

I plan to do the first at 500 miles-then at 1000 miles-then once yearly as I most likely won't top 2000 miles a year with this Mustang-with all other Mustangs I had averaged 2000 miles a year.Being a motor man-I like draining out clean oil every time.
My choice is Castrol-most likely the SYN-BLEND.

I have a question for you guys:
I just broke in the first 1000 miles on the engine. I live in Bogota, Colombia which is 9000 ft above sealevel. During the holidays I drove over to see my girl friend, this meant I had to drive 200 miles each way. During which I had to go down a mountain range to sea level, up a volcano to over 12000 ft. and back down to about 8000ft. Had fun doing it. Before I started the return trip I checked the oil and it was at the upper range of the dip stick, at about the same level when I got from the dealer. Once I got back and washed away some of the ash from the volcano (nothing mayor bogota polution is probably worse) I rechecked the oil and I find that it is now about half way on the dip stick.
Should I add a bit of oil? The manual says not to? would you guys change the oil and air filter (becuase of the ash)?

thanks, any input will be greatly appreciated

Almost every OM I've ever read states that more frequent oil changes and air filter changes are indicated in dusty conditions, so yes, I would change everything now, after inhaling the dust from the volcano.

I would re-fill to proper level, or just dump and change it completely using a new filter. Its normal for a new engine to use a little oil.
