Gimicky?

so is having a turbo 4 pumping fake noise into your speakers.

so is having an axleback just for the sound.

so is having a wing or spoiler of sorts on a DD car.

Shall I keep going?
I don't have a turbo 4 pumping anything anywhere
I don't have a wing
As for the Axle back it makes the car sound like what it is. A 400 plus hp Pony car

The fake lope idle makes the car sound like what it is NOT. Some cammed drag car

why are you getting all hurt about me saying its gimmicky? Because it is.
The track key for the Boss was proven to be less HP than the regular key as well.

If you like it, great. If not, don't add it to your car. Lots of things a gimmicky. Install the gimmicks you like (axle-back for the sound for example) and enjoy!

How is changing timing "gimmicky" they tune isn't written to just change the idle of the car it changes the timing and in turn effects the idle.

It's pretty obvious one isn't completely opposed to gimmickery if they actually bought one of these cars considering they come equipped with things like pony puddle lights, sequencing turn signals, color-selectable ambient and gauge lighting, piped in engine sounds, blinkys on the hood, etc.

There is a big difference between actively choosing a car because it has such gimmicks and putting up with the fact that you're stuck having them because of something that you really did want.

In the not quite 8 years that I've had my '08, I have never in the entire time tried to find the 'MyColor' feature, although my car is supposed to have it. It'll never get used, and the only reason I even know about it is because my (young) sales guy kept mentioning it like it was the neatest feature in the whole car bar nothing. Over and over and over again until it became like one of those silly little tunes that you just can't get out of your head.

I'm not above DIY-deactivating features so that they are inop or at least can't be accidentally turned on.

The track key also dropped horsepower and increased torque in all the Boss dynos I ever saw. The loped idle is gimicky. I'll pass
The idle is irrelevant to me but the TQ is very relevant and more torque or an improved torque band can easily pay dividends on the track, I'll still take it.

wrong.

first of all, the timing you are referring to is CAM timing, not spark timing.

changing spark timing is not needed and does nothing at idle. a tune can increase spark lead (timing) in high load areas or wherever it is needed to produce more power. Do you need more power at idle? all raising spark lead will do is cause your idle to surge and become unstable. that is nothing even remotely close to "lope."

a lopey idle is caused by overhead valve (not overhead cam) engines with large amounts of overlap, which means the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time for some degree of crankshaft rotation. overlap is one aspect of cam timing (when the intake and exhaust valves open and close, which come together to create duration, lobe separation, overlap, etc). these valve events are FIXED in an OHV engine and there is no variable valve timing (modern VVT OHV engines can advance or retard the whole camshaft, but not the intake and exhaust independently thereby affecting overlap).

the mustang has adjustable cam timing for the intake and exhaust separately. overlap can be moved around and increased or decreased. a tuner can make overlap not occur, occur before TDC or after TDC and can spread the ICL and ECL out or bring them together to decrease or increase LSA and overlap. a tune can command cam positions that vary with RPM, engine load, economy requirements, power requirements, etc.

There is 100% NO benefit from having overlap at idle except that it will blow unburned fuel out of the exhaust and smell and create poor emissions. Lopey idle is a byproduct of a big OHV cam with a good amount of overlap because that cam is designed to operate without regard to emissions or driveability and make torque in a higher RPM range, not for street driving.

Everything else done in the "track" tune could be exactly the same but with a smooth idle.
The only reason to induce lope in a DOHC Mustang is pure gimmick. For the sound effect only.

As mentioned, more like stuck with them. I removed the sound tube, I am embarrassed by the stupid pony lights and have thought about removing the bulb, my wife hates the turn signals but I don't care as much, the selectable light color is dumb, and I have considered removing the hood blinkers in favor of bigger vents.

There's a lot of Gen Y stuff on the new Mustang. I just bought it so I could play with the ECM/TCM calibration, lol.

Sell the pony lights! lol I did that when they came on my 14 and made a couple hundred bucks in the process. Me and a non premium guy just switched mirror "cores". I hated those damn things so much.....Not so much that there was a light, but the whole pony thing. :barf:

What color is your car? My wife loves the ponies
^Not sure how the 15s are, but on the 14s the painted mirror caps came right off the mirror so color didn't matter. What we did was the guy who wanted them took off his painted covers and sent me the internal mirror itself. I then took mine off, swapped his etc and shipped my internal "core" back to him. I still retained power mirrors, just lost the pony :) It was a very simple 10-15 minute operation for the swap and I want to say it was 2 or 3 bolts and one cord to unplug. (We did 2 day shipping to expedite the process and he paid for shipping both ways in addition to the agreed upon price).
