The engine note on these cars completely transforms with a set of long tube headers with a cat delete, but unfortunately I am an adult that can't daily drive a car with that loud of an exhaust and I'm way too lazy to swap cats in and out for inspection every year.

I know that some people combine long tube headers with high flow cats. Will there be any difference in sound over stock with this installation? That is, does most of the killer sound come from the long tubes, or the cat delete?

Anyone have any videos?

Thanks guys.

The metallic race cats that come with headers do very little in terms of volume or actually cleaning the exhaust. They help, but won't be nearly as quiet as the actual stock cats. I went from stock headers with cat-deletes(on my 2011 5.0) to longtubes with high-flow cats and I could not really tell much difference in how loud the car was, still damn loud.

You will still have problems passing emissions FYI. Being that you're in New York I would reconsider these. Been down this road already and it sucks.

Kooks states their Green Cats pass emissions readiness tests with the scan tools, not a visual inspection. So, a tune is not required with the Kooks Green Cats so when the emissions test center plugs in their tool to the OBD2 port, you won't have any non-functioning sensors or failed readiness tests when performed. They say on Ford vehicles, it was something like 90% of cars successfully pass emissions with the OEM calibration.

To answer the OP's original question, yes, the note of the exhaust will still change but these high flow cats STILL release a lot of volume. They do help tame some of the sharpness of a non-catted system, but don't expect the volume to be anything like stock manifolds and cats with a resonator delete.

You could do the Kooks Green Cat long tubes that connect to the stock resonator, leave the stock resonator and then use an axle-back of your choice? Let us know if you have any questions about ordering a set-up like this.

Thanks.

I'm not worried about visual inspection, just the scanning.

Obviously I'm not committed to doing this, just doing my research and seeing what my options are. So I appreciate the input so far and more would definitely be welcome.

I guess I thought that high flow cats were closer to being a real cat than being a straight pipe  I'll have to hear something in person one day to see if it's something I could tolerate.

I know I think that the Corsa Xtreme and other catbacks that are basically straight pipes are too loud for my taste, so I imagine long tubes with high flow cats will be too loud also, even if paired with something on the quiet side like an ARH catback.

Thanks for the input.

The ARH cat-back is NOT quiet lol That's what we run on our car, and while we're non-catted, it's one of the loudest BUT best sounding exhausts I've heard IMO. It screams!

No the green cats should be okay. But how much are they? $1000?

Having the readiness codes ready will be your biggest problem.
just under 2k for 1 7/8 headers with green cats.

I find my ARH to be pretty quiet under partial throttle, but yea it's pretty loud full throttle. To me it's just important that I can start the car and drive around town with clients without sounding like an 18 year old boy racer. Some rumble is acceptable, after all it's a mustang, but I can't be waking neighbors with cold starts. I find the ARH catback does a great job meeting those needs.

When I say I love the sound of long tubes with no cats I'm talking about your car in this video :headbang::headbang::headbang: Definitely the best sounding exhaust I've heard on this car.

I'd like some of the tone that the long tubes add, because holy hell it's sexy, but that volume would just be wayyy too much.

Agree, that's been my favorite sounding LTH/exhaust video for awhile. But damn... dump that clutch @ 5K+ at the strip!

I installed S&W long tubes with Hi Flow cats .. At that time I had Roush axle backs and it was so damn loud I had to remove the axle backs and weld back on my stock mufflers .. It's louder than stock but very livable ..

ARH is more on the quieter side, we run the full ARH setup along with off road x and LT's. Now its not quiet but we also have zero drone and its pretty mellow till you stomp on it.

If you want a system that sounds nice, not overbearing I would look at the ARH setup.
