Yup.

Ive personally owned an 04 , 06, 13 and currently own an 07. Theyve all been great. The 15 is drastically different. I suspect ill pick up a used one eventually for daily duty.

Alot of variables in this expaalnation.
Yup, I tried to cover that. Just showing people a data point that most people don't consider.

I realize this thread is about handling but I cant get past the STI engine..No thanks.

You have to keep it on boil to keep it in boost and every friend I've had thats owned one has had to deal with the ringland issues. There are pages and pages of people who have already been hit with the ringland issues on the 2015s. In addition the 5-60 times on that car are not so great.

GT PP err day over the STI unless you live in the snow.

Ring issues are a minority not the majority. Minorities always speak the loudest. Ive had 4 and had ZERO issues. Modded and stock. What do you mean keep it on boil? They don't have much lag, the turbo is pretty small. It makes peak torque usually between 3000rpms and 4500.

Subaru recalled a lot of engines because of the issues. As I recall it was a pretty big one.

When has the ej255 (2.5 wrx) or ej257 (sti) ever been recalled for the motor? I know the 08-09 had small batch issue that was isolated? They didn't make that an official recall if I recall correctly. Link to said recall?

That's what I thought, I thought they just made a tsb on it. The 08-09 were the ugly years. :D

I remember the threads on iwsti and nasioc. Didn't seem like a huge amount was subject to it. Just a small batch. That was unfortunate though.

I've had three friends that have had them and all of them have had issues...Some of them have had issues twice. Those guys were literally paranoid to go out and crank up their cars for fear of white smoke out the tail pipe. In addition all of them stopped modding because of the risk and warranty.

The 2015 I drove had horrible power when not in boost. If you just roll on power then in my experience its a forget about situation (hence the not so great 5-60 times). If its a hole shot its pretty decent with the AWD and the turbos spooled up. Great on the track where you can keep it on boil...not so great of a DD in which keeping it on boil will land you in the bank of a Police car.

That was my opinion of driving it, however.

You'd have to be a fool to buy a 2015/2016 STI right now when Subaru has said that they will change to all DI engines by 2017, never mind that the EJ257 is an unreliable POS.

That's unfortunate, but isn't the norm. I didn't replace that many ej257s when I worked at Subaru. I replaced far more 5spds then motors 10 fold.

Youd have to be a fool to buy any DI Subaru motor. Have you seen the build up on the valves in the 2.0 in just 7500 miles? Subaru can cram that DI up their ass. Until DI is improved, enjoy those 700-1200 dollar cleanings every 15-20k. Any savings you saw at the pump just went toward that cleaning

I know the earlier DI VW motors had that issue as well, and still do to some extent...are the Subaru motors worse? Any idea how the Ford DI motors are fairing? I kinda thought it was a fact of life with Di motors in general, since there's no fuel spraying on the back sides of the valves to keep things clean. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think I saw a pic on NASIOC or IWSTI of that WRX's FA20DIT's valves. An OCC would help, but there's the issue of installing one, making sure it remains installed and the hoses don't pop off, cleaning it every now and then, etc. I think that if manufacturers want to keep DI around in the future, they will need a way to combine the two like Toyota did:

Anyway, my comment was in reference to the ancient EJ257 which busts its ringlands and gets horrible fuel economy. I'd take an updated FA-based DI turbo engine over the EJ257 any day.

Audi still has it very bad. you can fill up a magnetic tool tray with what you get if left for about 30k. At least that's what the audi techs have shown me at our building next store. There is a dyno I posted of an rs4 losing 40whp in 20k from build up. Subaru isn't crazy bad but it sure isn't good either. The bmws I deal with every day have a good amount of build up. I know the mazda boys in the m3 hated it. Its just a flawed method for fuel until DRASTICALLY reduced deposits happen. Running meth helps but not everyone likes meth. For now its cons out weigh its pros by a lot. If we can get to the point it only needs a cleaning every 60-75k that wouldn't be so bad.
