What a long morning

Started on the way to work.

Almost made it to work, when all of a sudden my TPMS light came on. Showed there was only 20PSI in the passenger rear tire. I thought thats odd, so i go to a Shell station and fill it up. I could hear the air coming out as it was going in . Turns out there was a piece of metal in the tread grip.

I can't go to work with the tire like this, so i drive over to a sears that was nearby, and the air is leaking out fast. It was 35PSI when i left shell, and it dropped down to 10PSI right as i parked at sears. Luckily they just opened. Asked the dude at the counter if they carry Pirelli, and they don't. They don't even have that size tire of any brand in stock. So i decide to use the air pump that comes with the car (PP cars don't come with spares).

What an utter piece of shit.

I decided to use the sealant, and the shit just leaked out of the fitting! Didn't even go into the tire. The pump is useless too. So i called Ford Roadside Assistance for a tow to the dealer, hoping the dealer has it in stock. Dude looks at the tire and says it can be patched! So right there he patches the tire and gave me the metal that was stuck in the tire. Turns out it was a piece from a razor blade or a box cutter. My tire probably picked it up and the end of it broke off somehow.

With the tire patched, i drove over to the local dealer. Turns out they don't even have it in stock, and they wanted $314 per tire!! Tire Rack is $261 for the same Pirellis, and the dealer can't even match them because they said that price is below their cost! And no one else on the island carries Pirelli, especially that particular size (255/40/ZR19)

Three things i learned from this experience:

1) The air pump is utter shit. Its useless. Better off ordering a spare set (if your car isn't the GT with PP) and ford needs to know about this.

2) Finding tires in this size is very hard as its an odd size

3) the dealer marks the tire prices up very high.


Well, at least its patched and it'll hold for now. Ill probably just wait till i move to replace the tire.

Same thing happened to me, only thing it was a a metal rod sticking out of my tire. I'm pretty sure I picked it up on Kam hwy from all of that construction. Gotta love Hawaii roads. That was pretty much my last straw on my old mustang, traded it in for a 15 and haven't looked back since.

Yup, happened with my old taurus. Picked up a nail, patched it, and the horrible roads and steel plates everywhere threw my alignment out of balance and at 40k miles had to replace my two front tires because they were completely worn down on the insides (stock Michelins are supposed to last for 60k)

I went to Honolulu Ford for that quote. figured they would stock it since they're a top 10 Mustang dealer in the country but i suppose not.

I think Honolulu ford is going downhill. A bunch of their service guys jumped ship and are now at windward ford. Who knows though, dealerships are thieves anyways.

^ This ! A patched tire is pretty much like nothing happened, no need to replace it
I'm definitely buying a tire patching kit for my car in case that happens since I dont really trust that pump 100% either lol

Seems like I'm always patching tires as well. As long as the hole is small, they work great. Just be careful if you pick up a 1/4" bolt or something like that. Patches don't work too well in those cases.

Well with the way our roads are the tire is gonna be ruined in no time. Might as well be one step ahead.

Yeah it was a slice into the tread grip (not in the grooves) and the tow guy said it could be patched. I'll just monitor it closely for now.

But really, that air pump is a useless paperweight.

Tires for 19 inch rims aren't typically cheap. I've got 19 inch rims as well (not PP), and once my factory tires wear down, I'm going to buy a set of 20in rims and some Nittos. I'll save a significant chunk of change on tires alone, so upgrading the rims won't be a huge hit.

By the way, If you have a discount tire in your area, you can buy repair certificates for all your tires even though you didn't buy those tires from them. That way if a patch won't fix it (like sidewall damage or too big of a puncture), a new tire will only cost you a new certificate. I think in total it was about 275 for all 4, like 60 something per tire. Considering each tire is 300-400 alone, it was worth it.

They gave me a good price for Federals a while back on my old neon. In fact it still has those tires haha.

Yeah Honolulu Ford is a bunch of idiots. I refuse to take my car back to Cutter after my surveys got my service writer fired and I need my car serviced before I ship it to LA in a few weeks so...maybe windward ford it is. Haha
