How do you get voice commands to work on USB?

I have an old iPod Classic hooked in to the USB connection in the center console. Every time I try to use voice commands with it, it says "Indexing" and I can't use voice commands. I never unplug the iPod, but it indexes every time I get in the car. Since it takes about a half-hour to index the thing, I can only use the USB voice commands when I'm on a long drive. I have about 25,000 songs on the iPod, so it's not really practical to use the touch screen controls. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Wish I could help more. I have Sirius radio unit plugged into audio jack and when I hit the voice command say audio /line in the system will move from FM to my sirius unit. Can someone post a command sheet if there is one .. I found out the above by accident.

I mean, Si understand what voice commands to say, the problem is how to keep it from constantly indexing.

I don't think MFT/Sync plays all that well with iOS anything, and particularly with the old version your unit is likely running. My guess is it won't be long until your index is deemed to be full by the car and the unit won't work at all until you yank the fuse/disconnect the battery.

Sad to say, my suggestion is to put it all on a USB memory stick. I have "only"4,000 songs and the longest it indexes is 30-60 seconds. Just drag and drop from iTunes onto an open window for the memory stick.

I can fit most of my collection on a 256 gb memory stick -- that's one thing to try, I suppose -- but it's weird because I didn't have this problem on my 2011 Mustang's SYNC system. It only re-indexed if I had put new music on the iPod.

I could also try plugging in a regular 1 or 2 TB hard drive; that would hold my entire collection.

Also, the iPod Classic doesn't use iOS -- it predates iOS and uses a simple custom software package -- but maybe the system just doesn't like Apple. Weird, since the iPod shows up as an external hard drive in Windows.

My iPod Classic worked the best with my 2012 'Stang. I found hard drives to be tricky (long indexing, many errors), unless I used the "Sync My Ride" app to clean the files.

I hope you have luck figuring it out JimmyTwoTimes. When I get my car I'll let you know how I fare with the Classic.

I end up doing this:

unplug my classic
browse to the album/artist I want
play
pause
plug back in

(I'd rather use usb instead of aux for the charging)

the only way to not take it so long to index is to leave it plugged in (it can't die/reset either)

Are you sure that it remains plugged in AND not dead/reset?
