So yesterday I was getting on the highway and there was a 2014 STI in front of me. This is a 2 lane on ramp and I stayed behind him, so no we weren't racing. He gunned it and I did also, we went from 0-80 and my car stayed dead even with his till about 60 then I started to slightly pull on him for the next 20mph.

I drive a GT PP and I had no idea those STI's were that quick.

Just thought I would share my little story.

The 5.0L is not very special is stock form in the 2015. It really needs a power adder to be special.

What drive mode were you in? It seems to me that Normal Mode is pretty lazy but Sport+ wakes things up?

I agree that the 5.0 in stock form isn't exactly fast but should be able to pull away from a stock sti no problem, especially from a roll.

Stock 5.0 1/4 mile mph is 110-113. Stock STI is 98-100mph...
I could see in being close from a dig (what the OP encountered) due to the AWD launching capability.
Lose from a roll stock for stock, driver mod is needed or the STI is modded.

Stock sti is more similar to a stock ecoboost stang in terms of power to weight.

Drive mode wont make a difference in that situation. With the exception of snow mode, normal vs track vs sport does not change power level.

100% throttle is 100% throttle. It would be different if the driver is modulating throttle to negotiate a track, then you would see a difference.

The sti also has a 4.4 second 0-60. The difference is they have to redline it and clutch drop for those times. Poor drivetrain.

Lol! On public roads and normal driving conditions the spec of the GTPP is an overkill and now it can even lap faster than a boss302! I wouldnt call a car like that not special! The sti only has the awd advantage from dig but on highway or roll the 5.0 will walk away everytime! People with autos are getting 12.5 sec quarter mile stock with these cars! So at least lets show some respect!

STi's are like a box of chocolate you never know what you are going to get. Those things are easily modded, who knows what it was running.

WRX's trap 105+ in the 1/4 mile, also run low 13s.

Test sheet from Car and Driver..

Anyway once modded they can be easily close to 400hp+.

That being said they really start to taper off above 100+mph. Look at the 0-140 time of over 29 seconds. Quite a bit slower than a S550 Mustang

I was actually cross shopping these a new STI vs a GTPP at one stage. I had a modified WRX and they do have there sweat spot for acceleration when they are on the boost in the right gear. My old WRX had about 300 lb-ft at the wheels, weighed about 3200lbs and could do a 0-60 in under 5.0 without too much trouble. Ton of fun in the wet or dry. Was the STI stock is the big question?

Sounds like you probably didn't even hit the gas until he was already into boost.

STi's are cool cars just like the mustangs, I would say most are modded to some degree or another. Mine put down just over 400awhp when it was built and tuned on a mustang dyno. It is quite ( ok maybe a lot) quicker than my stock 15 GT 5.0 and my stock 14 C7 Z51.

I do believe it is more cost effective to mod the Mustang or the Corvette.

They are and they aren't. They do good work in 0-60 sprints because of AWD but their lower power:weight ratio is apparent 60+ and runs from a roll. Had you done a 20-80, or even a 0-120, you would have seen drastically different results.

That said it wouldn't take a lot of money to really crank out enough power for one to take a stock 5.0. I don't know about their reliability though and what each component of the car is rated at. I know the 2011+ Mustang GT's are good for 580-600rwhp, I'm almost positive you wouldn't get that out of an STI without changing out some weak links.

No idea if it was stock or not as I have never seen the person before. Just a random guy getting on the highway.
