I had a 2002 F-250 and when new the rear end looked like they salvaged it from a sunken ship. My '15 GT auto looks to be aluminum. At least what I could see while sawing off my exhaust.

I shot these this weekend, the car has not been in the rain, only 400 miles.

So you're talking about the housing vice the rear cover, right? The rear cover is aluminum, but the housing I'm not sure what the alloy is. I've had mine up in the air a few times and the coloring was so uniform (no spots or runs) that I thought it was actually a light brown coating of some sort, I didn't even think about rust... DOH!

Isn't the housing (rear chunk) on the PP 5.0's cast iron? This is why you see the surface rust. Just like your cast iron frying pans and brake rotors after you wash your car and oxidation starts.

I'm glad I photographed my chassis when mine was new. (well, 1,900 miles). Dont know what it looks like now. I also photographed my 2007 back when I bought it new - the axle housings were even clean! It never looked like that again; those are cherished photos. On a related note I wish I knew someone at a shop with a lift so that I could wash the underbody. It won't do anything for the rust but it would clean up some of the other parts like floor pan, black parts, gas tank, etc.

Yes...The housing NOT the Diff cover...and yes I believe its cast, so my underlying question is can or should you paint that?

The only thing that will see the rust is the neighbors cat. Haha. Jk.
