This.

One does not acquire wealth without being smart about how you spend it.
If they wanted to be smart with their money and not waste money on excessive gas use, they would've bought one of these,

The entire flaw with your argument is trying to create a connection between those making six figures and those complaining about the cost of gas.

Forum polls are inherently biased. And just because wealthy people participate in a poll on a forum where people make threads bitching about MPGs means jack all.
Why are people bitching about gas mileage when they bought a gas hog? That's like buying an apple and complaining that it doesn't taste like an orange.

My assumption would be that most people with lots of money waste money on things that they don't consider to be a waste. For example, the CEO at my company bought a $60,000 desk for his office. This incredibly expensive desk functions no better than my $300 desk that sits in my office. His desk cost $20,000 more than my car... This same person complains when someone spends $100 on something that isn't justified by him.

Why not?

I didn't buy this car for its fuel mileage. But why wouldn't I care? I was pleasantly surprised when I drove it home from the dealer last Friday. I reset the fuel economy average after I was on the highway at 69 mph. The darn thing got 28 mpg. To me, that's awesome as just another positive point about a car that has so much to offer.

I think that one thing to always consider is "happy." What makes you happy. I want 600 Horse Power (Bonafide SuprCar Status) and 30 MPG. That makes me "happy". I make 6 figures and I got the V6, but MPG didn't factor in one bit. I made me "happy." If I DID get the GT and it DID happen to get 30 MPG... then it made me "happier." But most of the GT guys didn't buy it for the mpg lol. They bought it because it made them happy.

The guy that owns a lamborghini and pays more than the cost of a GT in a year for maintenance... hes "happy" too. I bet he still complains to his wife that what he pays for gas and maintenance a year could buy him a new GT every year lol. I complain when I fill up the tank on my boat that this was 100 bucks better spent on mods for my Mustang or, a night out at the bar or a nice hooker (jk).. But it makes me "happy" to be on my boat pulling in cooler full of porgies and sea bass.

Actually you'd be a lot better off buying something like a Fiesta or Focus. Not much different in both initial cost outlay and fuel economy, and both are MUCH safer/better overall than a Smart. People that use Smart cars outside a major city are idiotic.

There is a poll on this forum about peoples salaries and 40% or so make over 100k per year. Yes I understand a lot of that has to do with cost of living but this is the funny part.

Its funny how many people here drive a 5.0 liter performance car and are extremely concerned about gas mileage. There are several threads about it, it gets brought up on a daily basis. Heck on average, gas is something 2.50 cents a gallon right now. This time last year it was like $4/gallon.

I just wonder why gas mileage is such a hot topic for people that are above middle class (average middle class annual income is $25,500 to $76,500), driving around in performance cars? :headbonk:
The only thing we know is that 40% of the income poll responses were for over $100k/year. That is not the same thing as 40% of forum membership, or even 40% of forum members who have posted anything at all.

We have an unknown percentage of the membership complaining about gas mileage.

There is no way to determine how much overlap between those two sets of people actually exists, short of perhaps a new poll requesting both income and position on the mpg issue (>$100 and mpg is very important to me / slightly important / not important . . . and the same all the way down through the income brackets).

FWIW, I've always been aware of the mpg my cars were supposed to get, at least at the time of purchase. But since "fun to drive" has always been of much higher priority, I really haven't cared or complained about mpg except for a short stint where I was having to stop at a gas station 3 times a week (and really, I was begrudging the time more than the $).

Coming from the world of 1960's and 1970's carbureted V8's, getting low to mid teens in a V8 car of similar performance has made my '08 feel like it is an economy car.

If I absolutely had to focus on mpg, I'd probably swap something like a Honda VTEC or somebody's small V6 into something tiny like an MGB or an Austin-Healey Sprite.

Yeah, and there are different ways to do that. Hyper-miling can be fun and enjoyable.

I don't find it odd at all. With technology improvements you get things like MPG improvements. Years ago the MPG in these cars wouldn't be possible. The MPG is just an added bonus and asking things that might help you get more isn't a bad thing.

People who have money usually are smart with their money and make it go far and on top of it, some people like a good looking car and don't want a bland MPG Prius. Getting both with decent MPG is just icing.

Why not? People drag race pickup trucks; what's wrong with hyper-miling a V8 Mustang?

Nothing with seeing what you can get. Just like there is nothing wrong with gunning a Prius from time to time to see what it can do (which is nothing ;))
