Long Scratch Rear Window | Tinting Company?

I took delivery of the car 3 weeks ago and realized yesterday that there is a long scratch outside, at the bottom of my rear window. :doh:

The scratch is deep (My nail gets caught) and long (the entire trunk panel).

I have washed my car a handful of times but that was through a touch-less car wash. So I am ruling that out of the equation.

The scratch is also too precise and is only at the bottom part of the window that makes vandalism unlikely. The car is also parked in the garage at night and is only taken out when I get back from work or on the weekends.

How can this happen... Tint shop? Dealership? Factory? Can I get the dealership to fix this?

(Picture) You can't see it in the picture clearly but it runs along the entire bottom part of windshield... almost the exact same size of the trunk panel. The white spots at the very bottom is just water marks.

Ford gave me 2 options
1. A full window replacement along with tint.
2. A money back refund $400

I want to do the full window replacement but I'm concerned that the seal will be off and I will have problems later on.
What do you guys think?

Most likely the tint shop. Had the same thing happen to me. I got most of it by using an orbital polisher and compound used to get scratches out of paint. Mine were not deep.

Didn't have much experience getting tint. Now I know to only go to places that use a machine to cut the tint to predetermined measurements.

Thanks for the replies.

I have contacted my dealer and they said to bring the car in and if it is the fault of the tint company they will have to deal with it.

I have also confirmed that they hand cut the tint outside the glass.

If a tint place did it, why would it be on the outside?

Unless, as Droid Junky said, some places may lay tint on the outside and hand cut it?! :eyebulge: Still, I don't see a scissors or box cutter/razor doing damage like that.

A lot of tint shops measure the tint out by using the outside of the window. They cut it then for it and apply it inside. So it makes sense that they scratched his glass.

If the tint shop didn't use high quality stainless razor to cut, which they do if they don't have plotter, that would scratch the glass.

Tint is laid of the outside of the rear glass and cut. Then it's applied on the inside. That's exactly what caused this. You guys should be detectives.

Polish it out and distort it so it looks like fun house glass after.
You would be better off just to leave it

Complete FUD. You can polish glass and it's not going to warp or make some funhouse mirror. Chemical Guys even has a youtube video polishing a windshield- I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing as one of the big names in detailing/products.

If it's too deep and your nail is really catching versus kind of catching where you can tell it's not too deep, go to a shop (or they come to you) like Safelite. They can fill the scratch with some resin and you should never see it. In FL chips/etc are repaired free in your insurance, but I can't imagine they would charge more than $30-50 for a scratch fill-in.

Take your car back to the tint company and demand compensation. They should be insured.
