On friday I had a local muffler shop weld on two Magnaflow 10416 mufflers with 4 inch tips similar to another user on here. I also have the resonator H pipe delete kit. Exhaust sounds amazing, but when I hit fifth gear at 40 mph and especially 6th gear at 50-75 the noise in the cabin is unbearable. I think it's drone, I've never had a car with an upgraded exhaust before so I'm assuming it is what's called drone, it's head splitting. I put the stock resonator back on (luckily it lined up with the H pipe section) and it helped a bit, but at 50-60 it's still pretty bad. A buddy of mine who has 3 fox body mustangs told me I would have to go from the round mufflers to the oval, which i looked up and Magnaflow 11226 would be the direct fit. But I would lose that great rumble on the outside.

What I'm confused is all the reviews I read on these 10416 mufflers stated no drone, quiet on the inside at cruising, and so on. So why so bad on my mustang? Is it the 3.31 gearing? And before I go blowing another $400 between the two mufflers and the install at the shop (that I really really don't have) is there anything I can do?

I already put the stock resonator back in. I have my JLT CAI intake coming in soon, which I believe comes with the sound tube delete, will that help (getting rid of the sound tube that is). I also read on a forum after a google search for these mufflers that someone put some sound deadening material in the trunk to help it. I would like to go back to my H pipe, and I love the rumble on the outside, but as I do a lot of highway driving as it is now it is just unacceptable.

Also another user mentioned that after a bit the 10416 mufflers should smooth out a bit, I guess as the material inside packs in or settle, will this help? Any suggestions would be great.

Removing sound tube won't help.

Flow masters have always been bad with drone.

I'm afraid the best option you have is to get different mufflers.

Those are pretty much what comes with the competition catback. I don't think you'll ever be able to get rid of 100% of the drone but they will 'burn in' and get quieter. I had the Comp catback on my 11 and the first 1000 miles the pressure from the drone was awful. Once they had some time/heat/carbon on them the got quieter and IMHO taking the sound tube out does help with the drone frequency. Done it on both 5.0s and my ears can tell. You can also add some Dynomat to the spare tire well.

Thanks! I will try all those. I figured that the sound tube may not actually do anything for the drone itself, but just quiet down the inside some. I will also look into the dyno mat. You think it's best to do the whole trunk or just the spare area? I acutally do have a spare tire. Also I was reading that drone has to do with frequency between two mufflers being the same length and so on, so maybe that is the reason that there is that section of flex pipe behind the cat? It got removed on mine from the Lethal H pipe delete kit, so now both sides are the same. I wonder if I could put some kind of sleeve inside one side of the exhaust to slightly change the diameter on one side so they aren't resonating. Also I looked into the J pipe, there is a muffler shop that got great reviews about an hour from me (mad hatter exhaust for anyone in Tampa), I'll see if that's something they can do.

They aren't called Magnadrones for nothing. If you have no luck getting rid of the drone get a Borla system. They have 0 drone. Well worth the extra $$$.

Np. If you can find a good shop that makes J tubes I'd go that route 1st.

Agree, the J tubes most be your first option, MBRP catback street series = 0 Drone with great price or get an axleback. Don't know if the dynomat will help...

The stock exhaust definitely has it's benefits. I'm fearful of changing stock exhaust out as it's dead quiet in my cabin. Also not waking any neighbors up when I get up. To each their own though.

And Corsa is well known for zero drone. The incorporate the Helmholz pipe to eliminate drone.

Magnaflows need a little time to settle in. Mine are great with zero drone, but they definitely sounded different when new. I have the street series mufflers with 3 inch h from cat to axle, no resonators.

I agree, I have the MagnaFlow Street series cat back (x pipe), and when I first got it, there was a bit of drone in the 1500 to 1800 range in higher gears (5th and 6th), but now that I have some mileage on them they are much better.
