Can a standpipe pan be designed for the 10R80?

That is how we used to fill transmissions, a big funnel with a small outlet nozzle and some patients and that was with thicker fluids than we use these days.

I was wondering the same thing. That alone makes me hesitate getting the new dipstick. When I added a second trans cooler I filled using long clear vinyl tubing of reasonable diameter. Pulling the new tube to speed up the fill kind of defeats the purpose, because I think the only real time to need the new dipstick is during a DIY fill.

Yes, I know, but this is a much smaller tube.

I have been asking this question for over a month and can't get an answer to it.. Ford doesn't say anywhere that I can find what the cold level should be and I am of the conclusion that it may vary depending on how much drains back into the pan. On different Mustangs they probably have different size radiators and perhaps the part that cools the trans oil is bigger also. I'm pretty sure my Performance Package 1 has a larger radiator. Some of the other types, gt350 for example may have transmission coolers. If more fluid drains back into the pan depending on features it may be impossible to give an accurate answer as to what the cold level should be as it may be different for each model.

Since I started the post I have been in communications with PML who produces transmission pans for many makes and model cars. They seem genuinely interested in adding a standpipe to the aluminum replacement pan that they make for Mustangs equipped with the 10R80. I'm not sure if this will happen but if it does it will make checking and changing our fluid much easier. I like to drain out the fluid in the pan about every 20K miles and replace it with fresh fluid. This may be overkill but from what I read the valve body is prone to get dirty and cause shifting problems. Replacing some of the fluid, about 5.5 quarts in my car, refreshes the detergent in the fluid. Since their pan already has a drain plug it would be easy to drain out 5.5 quarts, put in 6 quarts, let it heat up to operating temperature and then open the standpipe to let any extra fluid out. No more messing with the dipstick next to the catalytic converter and burning your hand.
