If anyone is interested in why tires like Michelin are so costly, this video is a great showcase of what goes into making the tires and some cool looks at their factories and machinery.

Personally, I do not believe the lower end tire market has this type of quality, QC, testing, etc, which is why I'd never consider any of them.

All that’s fine but the proof is in the pudding. They just don’t make the best tire for most people uses.

So, when I bought my Mustang back in May, it came with a set of these tires on it.

I had never heard of them, it saw that they were pretty cheap, as far as price goes. They’re rough riding, do not grip well, etc.

Went by Discount Tire today to preside some new tires. With their warranties, the Continentals I was looking at were about $1300, and the Michelins were higher than that. I have 245/45R19s on it now. Want to go a bit wider. Either 255 or 265. Anyone know of a solid, good riding tire that’s not insanely expensive like the Michelins?
I would go to Tire Rack's website and compare the tires. They post test results for most tires. Look to the characteristic you value most (cornering, braking, dry traction, wet traction, etc.) and base your choice on those results. Your tires accelerate, turn, and brake your car. A difference of 10 feet or so in braking distance could mean the difference between a crash and a near miss.

Thanks for the info. Actually bought a set of Continental EXTREME CONTACT DWS06 PLUS. Have been extremely impressed with them. Would recommend them for sure!

TireRack.com doesn't sell a ton of Chinese tires but I wish they would do some tests with them.

You pay for what you get, but I’ve heard the Aturo AZ850s are good.
My only issue with the Atturos is that the sidewall is softer than the MPS4S and they are pretty bad in the wet. The ride feels less planted and a little mushier and my goodness do they slide around in the wet. I haven't launched on them so that part I wouldn't know, but they are great in-between tires for sure.

Falken, Firestone, Cooper all great tires that cost less. I do love Falken FK510 smooth and quiet ride great traction wide operating temp range.
I'm considering these FK510s. Could you describe your experience with that tire's initial turn-in bite/steering response?
Falken FK510 and the FK460 AS are both great options within their segments. Very affordable, quiet, solid traction for the street. Personally ran the FK510 for a few years on my S197 and there wasn't a single thing I could complain about. When I sold the car, the tires had around 8k miles on them and were maybe worn down to 3/4 tread remaining. Wouldn't hesistate to run either setup, if I needed a summer street or all-season tire.
I'm debating the FK510s and PS4S tires. Both are 300tw, but there's ~$450 difference between the two. I just had conti dws06+ put on, but the sidewall flex has neutered the car. The car now feels like it's falling over on itself in heavy turns, and the steering response is delayed. A softer sidewall construction can be a good thing if comfort is one of the tire's highest priorities, but it's the total opposite of what my car is setup to do.

Can you elaborate on your experience with the FK510s? Do they have fast, sharp steering response and feel? Discount tire is going to exchange these dws06+ for whatever I choose, but I'd hate to put another "numb" tire on the car.

Add more air to the tires you just put on?
Did that right away. Wasn't near satisfactory. Psi ain't gonna fix what this tire has going on.

Just saw your post....Im an assertive urban driver as well as tight twisty mountain tourer never at max. IMO the 510s are a refined balanced handling tire and I never noticed dull response or delayed transitions I really like the tire.

Thanks for that link.

Track testing in pleasant climates is way different in real world cracked broken pavement and concrete not to mention temp differences and vehicle suspension calibration.

I purchased Pirelli Pzero AS+3 based on Tire Rack extremely high rating ....I threw them out after 10K miles.....Tire Rack is a a good indicator but user reviews far more valuable IMO.

How hard are you driving? I have the Continental Extreme Contacts and I don’t notice any of that.

I will throw my opinion that generally tirerack.com reviews and data seems to be bought and paid for.

If you want some real world data and testing on tires check out Tyre Review on youtube, they are pretty in depth and do actual driving tests on these tires and show you the difference.

I am biased because I love Michelin, but that link a few posts above has PS4S on par in handling with all season tires and that is just not the case.

Tirerack and discount tire were sold off and are far from what they once were. I will buy slightly cheaper tires from them but I take what they say about tires with a grain of salt.

Michelin and quality? Their own quality control shows that 1 batch of tires can have treads varying by as much as 8/32. That's more than some BRAND new tires have for tread depth. To have a full tire variation within the same exact batch and even if it was 2 batches everyone. Else is within 1-2/32 variation between batches. Michelin can't make shit consistent or solid. Their tires are banned on work vehicles in my area due to constant defects and blowouts from the defects.
