Um... There's a reason why every single car I see has one of these on the back:

And a lot of them have these on the front:

And a lot of others have these:

It's because dings just happen. They're a fact of life. Nobody really pays attention to them.
if I had to choose between any of those horrible pieces or dents/scratches, I'd take the scratches.

I would pay to see some of the door ding crusaders in this thread drive and park their 'precious' in New York.

You also have to pay attention to the slope of a parking lot. Especially on windy days. I never park my car at the bottom of a hill. Your best bet is to start with the least aggressive solution first.
+1
Years ago I came out of a store to find that a shopping cart had rolled down the gentle slope from the building all the way to the far end of the lot, leaving a dent in the fender. Just my luck; my truck was the only vehicle within 500 yards, lol. Now I always look for high ground!

God reading what a living hell living in NY is from all of the infamous poster's comments, I breathe a sigh of relief and feel 100 times happier when I think of the beautiful open real American roads and quality of life on the West coast. I dont know who would want to live in that place.

I guess New York air must affect the brain some how.
This is true. Couple of years ago I went to go visit my in-laws in New York and ended up parking on the street. My car was keyed all the way to the metal, just because it had Canadian Plates. I swore I would never drive to New York again.

Did they leave a note saying it was because you are Canadian?

I hate shopping carts in parking lots

As it has been said in this post by others, get a professional to look at it. Unless you have extensive experience in auto body paint work you can make a bad situation worse. I have really been there and done that trying to save a some money.

I hate shopping carts in parking lots. Seven years ago a shopping cart decided, with the help of high winds, to escape from Walmart. It crossed a major street where it stalled in the middle of it. Fortunately I slowed down to avoid hitting it but the person behind me did not. Bottom line, shopping cart lives my rear bumper did not.

Good luck and get the pros to fix it.

It all depends on what you're looking for. New York is in no way, shape, or form a "driving" city, and it's designed specifically to be unfriendly to cars, so that's one thing... but as far as "quality of life" goes, it doesn't get better than here. When I want to drive I can always go to the beaches on the east end of Long Island or to the mountains in Pennsylvania, but as far as living life goes, there's no better place than New York. As John Updike put it, "The true New Yorker secretly believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding."

As a rule of thumb, when visiting New York you take a plane, train, bus, rental car...really anything but your own car.

Trust me it was because I was Canadian. There were other "nicer" cars parked behind and front of mine but went untouched. The Yankees were playing in Toronto at the time so that helped.

If accepting door dings, fender benders, no parking, and living in constant fear your car alarm is going to piss off your neighbors and they will smash your window then yes, New York is the place for you.

Under further investigation today I noticed my driverside bumper was sticking out in the corner. I pushed it back in with no problem. So it had to be a car. The person must have went over the curb to turn left and hit my car. The cart near my car was just a coincidence. Unless somebody did on purpose with the cart with some force.
