You got somebody arrested because he dinged your car opening his car door? Jesus, man -- that's ridiculous. If you drive a car in public, dings and dents and scratches WILL happen. They're not a big deal. I've already got a couple of tiny ones on my doors (parking garages in Manhattan have super-duper narrow spaces; if I don't fold my mirrors then the mirrors will overlap the white lines on both sides around the car at my normal garage). It's just the way of things.

This. The poster didn't "get him arrested". He got himself arrested. $100 he didn't take responsibility, then mouthed off one too many times to the police.
Fair enough, and some people do like to mouth off to cops and I think they basically get what they deserve when they get arrested for it, but still, calling the cops on somebody because they dinged your door and said "it's only a fxxxing car, man" is really beyond the pale. Like, unless the guy was threatening physical violence or something, why escalate things by calling the cops?
I usually make the assumption with stories like these, the call to the police wasn't based on this act alone. I would guess that he has historically been an @ss to his neighbors and this was the "straw->camel's back."

Dash cam for incidents that happen while driving isn't a bad idea. This would help out when you get into the "he said, she said" arguments after an accident. When I was young someone hit me at an intersection (their fault) and they were able to convince the police it was my fault. Footage would have helped out my case in that situation. As for parking lot bumps and bruises... not sure it would be overly helpful. You might get a glimpse of the culprit, but you won't always get their plates. And if they exit the view of the camera and shortly thereafter a car passes the camera, it would be hard to prove it was the same person. So unless you know them by sight, not much will come of it.

No it is not "just the way of things". Door dings and scratches DO NOT have to have if people pay attention to what they're doing. And if somebody does damage your vehicle, do the right thing...leave note on the windshield with info and offer to fix it. This is an INTEGRITY issue...plain and simple. DO the right thing thing...that's all it boils down to. And it doesn't matter what kind of vehicle it is...it could be POS, but you don't know how hard that person had to work to achieve the financial ability to purchase that vehicle. I busted my ass for 24 years in the military to get to where I am today and have the ability to buy my Mustang...its a base model, but I put a HIGH degree of value on it, due to what it took for me to get it. So, if that happened to my Stang...fuck'n right I'm going to be pissed!! Now a rock in the windshield going down the highway...yeah, that's just shitty luck. I gotta say...that's a fucked up way to think man.
