So I just got my car, it's a GT Premium with just the 400a package.

I've been reading up, and noticed that the navigation system requires an SD card to activate. That got me to thinking that the 401a package for sync is the exact same as the 400, but it just includes the software for the navigation.

Can i buy that software and install, to get navigation working in my car?

Nope... its not that easy. The401a package includes a circuit which is not put in 400a package in my ford touch.

Even i was in same boat and got all info i can. I have EB premium without navigation. SO i found out there is circuit which is added inside my ford touch system which enables navigation

The 401a is the Shaker Pro/BLIS/memory seat package. Nav is a stand-alone option on both.

My understanding is that you are SOL on installing the nav after the fact if is not initially included (i.e. more than just sticking in the SD card is required).

Sorry, bud.

Yea I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with 400 vs 401a it is just a stand alone $750 option

yes navigation is stand alone... in which that circuit is put in my ford touch when you opt for navigation, which enables the use of the navigation card .

Just buying card will not do, u need the circuit inside ur sync

I posted a video awhile back showing a guy that installed into his Ford Edge with MFt minus navigation. It was hardware, software and required much if the front dash and kick panel to be removed.

I would assume the board is a modular board, that can be installed as easily as this Garmin system, that SD card probably updates the drivers for the baord and allows the program to operate with the OS.

If so, I would only need to find out were to buy the board and SD card.

The SD card is simply the map data. If you remove it, then it can't find POI information, routes, etc.

It's 1.5 years old, but the process would be the same.

Jeffrey, you get my internet applause of approval for the day. I knew this was not a hard thing to accomplish.

Now the fun part is to find the board, and components at a fair value. I've see this upgrade kit at around 1000 dollars... that just dumb... I'm thinking if I can find a wrecked navigation enabled car, I can buy the parts off it cheap. And now the search begins.

It's possible if you can find a wrecked it may be easier without taking everything apart, but I don't have any direct knowledge of that.

I was interested in doing this to my '14 Fusion that I bought without Nav, but never did it. In my Mustang I made sure to order it with it :)

$1,000 is the going rate for those parts... which is why I don't understand how anybody could order a Premium model without navigation... but, to each their own.

Yea I love the Waze app and will still break it out when traffic is bad and I want an alternate route but after looking at my little iPhone screen for a few years I had to have the nav

I made that mistake on my Fusion. I thought I wouldn't need it, but the reality is it drove me crazy and the benefits to built in nav are very nice.

Mustang, I'm not making the mistake. Plus, if one watches the video for the install, it's pretty evasive. If I didn't have Nav in my car now, I'd just live without it.
