Hello
My son passed his driving test about 2 weeks ago, and I added him on to my car insurance and paid a fee about $50 as there was only 6 weeks left until the insurance ran out.
Potential and Opportunity of Telematics in Car Insurance
I'm now looking at renewals for the coming year and I'm getting quotes of around $680 with him as an additional driver (and he will be as it is my one and only car). However the cheapest quotes require telematics of either black box or app, but what I can't seem to find out is whether I would be required to use the telematics when I drive or just him? Hoping someone can clarify that's been in a similar position, thank you.

Black box telematics would be for any driver of the insured car. There would be no distinction between drivers. An app on each drivers phone would be the better option. That way there is separation of the drivers telematics data. You may be able to set it up so you can see how your son's driving habits are and instruct him accordingly. Get in touch with your insurance advisor and find out all the details.
More importantly has your son taken a drivers training course like Drivers Ed? I highly recommend it. Big insurance discounts with this and more importantly, potential life saving, accident prevention, defense driving skills to be learned.

Geico use to have an " online" class ( really video series ) you could do and get the discount.

Sorry to hijack your thread. You used "quotes" (plural) twice. Are you saying that other insurance companies aside from Geico are requiring telematics?

When we added my nephew as a new driver, the telematics was only needed for him, not the main driver, so you’d likely be fine driving without it. It helped lower the premium a lot for his first year. Also came across pedir ayudas while looking into car-related grants and info in Spain—useful for general guidance on insurance and support options if you’re ever curious.

Year, make, and model of the car would be helpful here. Many vehicles come from the factory with telematic units in them.

^^^ There is the answer…. Doesn’t matter who the driver is, with the “tracker” it’s not tracking the driver, its sole purpose is to track how the car is being driven ( safely vs. aggressive vs. not so safe)…

If finances permit and you can get the other driver into their own vehicle, then the telematics would be for that vehicle only… and if the son is driving safely or not, then the tracking data is solely on him and that car…

As others have suggested too, any defensive driving course - such as actual teacher/student driving courses will help with a young/new driver’s insurance. However it’s not going to be a huge savings because it’s just fact that a young inexperienced driver is the highest risk to an Insurance Company and other drivers on the road….

The other ways you can lower your insurance costs:
- raise your deductibles to figures you can afford to pay out of pocket if there is a qualifying event

- I forget which it is, as it’s different in every state but if you have medical/healthcare insurance you can decline that piece from your auto policy

- anti theft - such as if the vehicle has an alarm system or if you have a device such as LoJack installed. Some states will offer a discount on your comprehensive portion of the policy up to 10%-25% for LoJack type of devices.

I have used the progressive snapshot in the past and chose not to for the last couple of changes. it actually encourages risky behavior.

a good chunk of the streets in vegas are 45mph. when coming up on a light and it switches to yellow, your choices are hit the brakes and get beeped for excessive braking or speed up a tad and run the orange light. what would you do?? snapshot encourages driving like an 80 year old that never leaves the house and in this city, you will be the target for road rage all day long.

I quoted my last policy with and without snapshot and it gave me a whopping $40 discount on a 6 month paid in full policy. no thanks.
