Um, so this has been in the works for a while now, but I'm now writing for Detailing Shed, helping to flesh out their blog posts with hands on experience and knowledge.

The first blog went live today, which I cover wheel and tyre cleaning.

How To Clean Wheels and Tyres | Detailing Shed

I'm super excited about this opportunity, it's going to allow me to play a small role in product development and testing, without the financial strain of it being my full-time job. While I do enjoy getting my hands dirty with the hands-on element of detailing, it's the product and tool side of the industry that enthuses me most. I think this gig will be a good fit for me, and I'm hoping it does well.
Good for you. That’s awesome. 👏👏👏

Surely it's cheating with your climate?

On another note, is this thread the place to ask about "what's on DFBs floor?" Not sure if you've answered elsewhere, but does your floor drain somewhere? Is it resin/sealed underneath?
Considering the XR6 has VERY rarely been driven in the rain since it was retired from daily driver duty back in 2010, I think that has something to do with the longevity.

The flooring is Swisstrax Ribtrax Pro that was installed over a concrete slab.

There is a drain at the front of the garage, but any water than passes through the tiles drains out of the garage or evaporates away. (My garage is not completely airtight, so moisture is free to escape. There are channels molded into the base of the tile to allow water to flow if needed.

People get hung up on the "where does the dirt go" aspect of these tiles. Trust me, as a clean freak, I was hesitant about that as well. But in reality, it's a non-issue because dirt and leaves simply fall beneath the tile, making the standing surface clean to work on.............ideal for detailing. A quick vacuum every few weeks and your set.

@DFB5.0 , wondering about your opinion of Stjarnagloss products and if you have tried them? I am intrugued by them, I know they are a rather small start up but have a genius marketing engine (Very Chemical Guys like :) ) and are highly promoted by the Rag Company. I do frequent the Rag Company site. I ordered a few products and am anxious to try them out. Their prices are pretty reasonable compared to some products I have bought (ie KCx, Gyeon, and Carpro). I will get them in a few days and try on my next wash.. Here is what I have ordered so far

Hjul wheel cleaner. Sounds very NV Purge like.
Glatt spray and rinse sealant. Similar to Hydro or Wet Coat
Forst. Citrus degreaser. Will use for deep cleaning tires and bugs/tar most likely
Parla. Spray sealant. Similar to Reload and/or S0.02
Sno. LIke Lift, Gyeon Foam or the like
Matta, soap mainly used for Matte finishes but a pure soap with no enhancements.

We don't get the full range in Australia, so I would really like to hear your thoughts when you can.

Yaaaay! I managed to land a public holiday! Thanks Dan................. :like:

Sanity detail on the XR8 first up this morning, my antics clearly entertaining the neighbors across the street watching while they sat on the front porch.

IMG-9642.jpg

I washed the wheels with Purge for a deeper clean, tyres with Brake Buster. NV Snow was in the foam cannon, with OG Drying Aid after the wash, OG Tire Dressing on the rubber. I also decided to top the DLUX on the rear diffuser with a coat of Reload 2.0.

Will do. Gummi was on my list but I am really satisfied with my current lineup of tire dressings. Parla seemed more interesting to me than Silke although a simple drying aid might be worth having. I'm most interested in the Forst citrus cleaner and the Hjul. It will have to be awesome to stray me away from Purge as it is awesome.

You're not missing out on Gummi, its garbage and I recently gave it away.

Silke is a simple quick detailer, used it today in fact. It's nice, but not great.

Forst is apparently excellent, not sold here though.

Lol. Yes I saw that video. The guy from the Forensic Detailing Chanel loves Forst too. Forst is the only one I have currently. The others should be here first of next week so they will have to wait til the next weekend wash.

Dear Dr DFB5.0:

Could you please tell me if you have anything in the cabinet that removes the accumulated crud that adheres to Mustang decklids/Ranger tailgates/pretty much any vertical rearward facing vehicle surface.

It feels like someone sprayed sticky grit on there, and pre-soaking with a follow up wash does nothing to remove it. I don't believe it's all tar as it's largely invisible, but I may be wrong.

Grateful as always for your wisdom.

Cheers

It sounds like some sort of adhesive residue, tree sap or iron contamination. Do you park under or near a tree such as a gum tree or deciduous Maple of some sort? Both can shed a sappy residue at certain times of the year, especially if the tree is invested with aphids.

I would start with a tar remover, these target adhesives and tree sap in addition to tar. Spray on, allow to soak, rinse. You may need to reapply and agitate with a towel if the first pass doesn't do the job. Look at Carpro TarX, Gyeon Tar or Koch Chemie Eulex (be careful with that one).

Get CarPro Tar X Remover | Waxit – Waxit Car Care
Gyeon Q2M Tar (Remove Tar, Sap, and other stubborn contaminants) 500ml (detailingshed.com.au)
Koch Chemie EU - Eulex Glue, Tar, Tree Sap, Oil Remover (autobuff.com.au)

If that doesn't work, then progress to an iron remover. You may not see iron contamination but it can often be felt. Again, apply and allow to soak, then rinse. Inspect. NV Purify (highly recommend) or Gyeon Iron are the better ones.

Nv PURIFY | Advanced Clay Lubricant | Waxit – Waxit Car Care
Gyeon Q2M Iron 500ml/4L Decontaminate and maintain (detailingshed.com.au)

If that doesn't yield the result, then you would progress to some sort of clay product, be that a tractional clay bar, or the newer clay towels/mitts/sponges. Pair that with a lubricant or the iron remover (not the tar remover though).

DS Clay Mitt Ultimate Fine Grade (detailingshed.com.au)
The Rag Company Ultra Utility Clay Scrubbers (detailingshed.com.au)

Thanks!

Lucky you! I live in country Victoria, so I would be there all the time if I was closer.
