Hi. Does anyone know if we are doing a SYNC update with car engine OFF and battery charger on, will the accessories stay turned on or will it shut off after a while for battery save? Thanks

I don't know about the 2019 (not sure when they made the switch), but the 2016 only did WiFi updates when it was connected and sitting in the garage totally off. Mine tried it once and it failed so I disabled that option.

When updating live with the USB, the recommendation is to have the engine running but first you have to disable the auto shut-off to keep it idling long enough. (Or just drive it around)

I tried the engine off with a charger option once and it wouldn't even go.

Maybe you can try disabling the auto-shut off and then turning on the ignition without starting the engine. Perhaps that will leave the ignition on (powering the accessories) until you turn it off. But I haven't tried it. Having had unsuccessful experiences with the other two methods, I have just stuck with the recommendation in the instructions. The first update took forever, but subsequent version updates have been much faster.

Speaking of which... I still have an update that I've never installed.

If they went to the "new hardware" for 2019 (someone will have to chime in) then it could be totally different from my experience. As I understand it, there isn't much "new hardware" they just stopped supporting the 2016 Sync 3 after a certain software version, but many have been able to hack the follow-up versions onto the 2016 hardware that isn't supported.

I confused here.

What accessory has to stay on? And why are you hooking up a battery charger?

This all sounds needlessly complex.

Because it took over an hour with my accessory drive on using WiFi.

OK, if are are using a USB drive and do not want to run the engine for however long it takes, you can use the accessory mode. Just go into sync setting and turn off “Auto Engine Off”. Then you can use you charger and you should be good to go.

Wifi does not require the accessory mode to be on. Just WiFi and auto updates.

Are you saying you've completed the update? Is this a recent SYNC update?

I know I updated my car several months ago, and IIRC, the accessory power stayed on during the process.

My accessory did stay on also which was good. My 19 updated to 3.4 which I take is the newest.

So with my car turned off the car will update automatically while in my garage?

Mine has before, yes. Will it this time, your guess is as good as anyone else.

Would you like a partial list of the myriad of technical and physical variables that may hinder such an event? (no)

I've had mine update the Sync while sitting in the garage over wifi. Maps are way bigger and would take a very long time.....so I've always updated them over USB.

Do you get the NAV Update on the Ford Update web site or another site? Did you pay? Thanks

Mine was a free download. You go to the Ford website and then navigate to Sync>Maps>Updates.
