Idling when cold adds extra wear on the engine than if it were warm.
So driving when cold has a different effect? A load on engine when cold is better than idling/no load?

You're not going full WOT when cold. The only reason to idle is to get your Oil circulated which only takes a few seconds. After that your car will warm up to operating temperature MUCH faster when moving than when sitting idle. Also, when idle you are burning more oil than when moving.

Even in 25* weather, it takes maybe 30-45 seconds of idling to get my car up to 100* based on the dash, then I pull out. By the end of my road, not even a 1/4 mile I'm in the 120's and nearly at operating temp and able to do WOT pulls maybe 3 minutes later because my tranny and rear diff has also warmed up. You're still sitting there idling for another 10 minutes at that point, and your rear diff and tranny are still cold.

An example, is police cars. They spend a lot of their time idling so when people end up buying them one of the first things they do is, in the case of Chevy's, must replace the cam as the idle cause's extra cam wear than if it were driven.

I just start and drive. No warm-up. (Of course, this is SoCal.)
