Based on a comment in this thread, this question came to mind:

Do Dealers not simply take a new car to the local petrol station to fill up? Surely they don't have there own 'supply' of petrol, right? Then again, now wondering if that would make sense, based on the volume of cars that are sold, etcetera.

That’s a great question. I don’t believe that where I bought my car had their own gas/petrol. What I did was drove the heck out of it until I was down so I can fill up with premium just in case.

Some dealers will take to a local station to fill up, some will have their own supply. I doubt a single one of them ever uses premium even on cars that require it. They certainly do not care about “starting it off right”. The porters filling the cars up don’t care and they are told just use the regular anyway.

Correct, and I’m sure quite a few of them beat the hell out of it on the way there and back.

My dealer here in SC has his own pump. My dealer up in NJ went across the street to the gas station.

Depends. There is an auto mall where I live (Las Vegas, NV) that has 20 some odd dealers in one area. They have dedicated fuel pumps for all the dealers to use. I bought my 2017 and 2020 GT's from the Ford dealer in this area, and actually drove the 2017 to the fuel pumps when I bought it with the salesman so he could fill it up. (He actually sent me picture of the 2020 when he took it over to fill it before I picked it up.) A Nissan dealer that my wife leased two cars from in another area of town just takes new cars to the Chevron on the corner near the dealership to fuel up. (I road with the salesman for one of them.) I would guess this may be the case in other areas, but who knows.

That being said, all of the base gas in my area is the same. There is a pipeline that pumps the fuel up from California to a man storage area. One day they pump 87, next day 91, etc. depending on what they need, the fuel is not brand specific. The only difference is the companies then get that fuel from the storage area and take it and add in their individual additives (Chevron adds Techron, etc.) if they add additives at all. My guess is the pumps at the auto mall just have the base fuel with no additives.

Can't remember if anything in the mustang manual states that for extreme circumstances (track use, etc.) to run premium. Will have to look next time I have my manual out.

I looked, nothing but bold #87. I’m sure Ford’s marketing dept. knows exactly the percentage of customers that would walk away from a premium fuel only vehicle.

I work at a dealer and no matter if it's a golf R or a GTI it's not premium.

Yes, the car runs better on high octane. No, dealers don’t fill it up with that. But it’s not going to hurt the vehicle. And it’s not like you are going to do a dyno run at the dealers?

This is interesting. Do you not have Brand specific fuel stations with branded top tier gasoline in your area ?
Here in Urban Chicago and Gary IN. area we have brand name refineries where crude is piped into each major distiller. If the fuel doesn’t pass inspection it is sold to discount fuel stations. The fuel that passes is only sold at the name brand fuel station.

When you purchase a new car, i.e. a Mustang GT PP1, and the dealer fills it up, there is no way to know if they put Unleaded or Premium petrol in, right (besides asking)?

We all know dealers try to give you, the customer, as little as possible.

Uhhhhh .............. You do realize the cars are shipped from the factory with 87 octane in them right ?

Why would they put premium in? It is not the required fuel for a Mustang GT.

Nor, are they required to. Ford requires simply a full tank of gas. Be glad it says that. You might get monkey piss otherwise.

Could it be because you went negative on the dealers from the get go ? If I were one of the many forum paid dealer advertisers, I would find your comment offensive.

Oddly, this conversation was not about what is the correct petrol, or gas, as an American would say. It was more about a Dealer's action in regards to petrol.

Dealers and Car Salesmen, to me, are always trying to get one over on a customer. Thus, I merely wondered if this was another case of that, i.e. the Salesman putting in cheaper unleaded, versus putting in premium.

To me personally, if I was selling the car, I would like to think I would have put in Premium petrol for the customer. Thus, starting the car off 'right'.

Sorry ............. You are so wrong on so many counts. Evidently you need to quit going into dealers with an apparent chip on your shoulder. Just my .02
