I‘m currently trying to get scheduled for some Dyno pulls locally at a place that I’ve used before about 8 years ago. Since the car is already Lund tuned, all I’ll need is just a few pulls to determine hp/tq. Should I make one or two pulls on each tune (Flex, E85R and nitrous)? I was also wondering if afterwards it would be a cool idea to do a 1/4 mile pull on the roller? Yes, I know an accurate 1/4 mile ET will have to happen at the track, but perhaps the results of a 1/4 mile hit on the Dyno will give me something to work toward at the drag strip.

Does anyone know of any concerns or cons to doing a 1/4 mile pull on the Dyno (i.e., broken half shafts, tranny, or extreme wear on other parts)?

See video. I don’t know if this will be an option, as it’s my understanding that only a Mustang Dyno has this feature. I do intend to inquire about it though.

The cons about doing a run on a dyno is that you don’t capture the wind forces and resistance of the front tires and other inertia effects. It’s a little more involved than that, but it’s not going to capture the whole picture.

That is correct, that’s why a mustang Dyno reads lower. My car makes about 30 HP and 40ftlb less on a Mustang Dyno.

Gotcha! I’m just looking for a target ET to chase if you will. I know an actual 1/4 mile ET at the drag strip will be slower because of all the variables that you mentioned.

There are online calculators for 1/4 et/mph based on power and weight. Those are rarely super accurate but about as trustworthy as a 1/4 mile pull on a dyno given all the unknowns of the dyno's calibration and lack of forces acting on the car.

I’ve got software (drag sim 5) if you give me the Dyno curves I can input and spit out an estimated time. It’s fairly accurate .

The shop that I’ll be using charges $100 per hour. Again, these will be power pulls only, no tuning required. Given that the car is tuned for Flex, E85R and nitrous, would you guys recommend that I do 2 pulls on each tune, or skip the Flex and only make pulls on the E85R and nitrous tunes? I’m hoping not to exceed 2 hours time on the dyno. Thanks.

I’d just do your E85R and nitrous tunes. That’s assuming your e85 tests close to 85%. Unless you are just wanting to see how good the flex tune is on good ethanol. But if you decide you want all three tunes tested I’d do it in this order... E85R,NOS, and then Flex.

That’s exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! Yes, my nGauge alcohol content is showing 84.7% (pump ethanol), and I still have 7.5 gallons of One Ethanol left. The drive to the dyno is about 35 miles away from my house. I’m going to carry the extra fuel with me and top off the tank when I get there for extra insurance. Thank you!

@TX50H,

Update:

I put the car on the Dyno today. Unfortunately, the torque reading was not displayed due to a problem with the Dyno’s torque sensor. Having said that, the graph only shows hp and mph. I don’t know if your drag sim can do anything with this information, but thought I’d post it anyways.

Were the pulls free?!?!?! Or will they let you run again for free when the thing is working?

No, the runs weren’t free. I didn’t ask, but I’d like to think he would let me run again for free if I went back. It would certainly be the right thing to do.
