This might help.......

The tax is passed along to the consumer during the vehicle sale, typically costing $1,000-$1,500. The amount is posted on the window sticker for the buyer to see beforehand. The amount varies because it depends on 1) that particular model’s combined city/highway fuel economy and 2) the number of gas-guzzling cars produced that year by that manufacturer.

So, if you buy a car in the beginning of the year you won't get hit by the tax but you would pay it later in the year as more gas guzzling cars are produced?

Guy, lighten up. This law dates back to a different time in America. 1978 to be exact. The law was not designed to go after 21st century muscle cars. That said, I do believe changes to the law should have been changed years ago to include SUV's and Trucks. Can you just imagine the uproar that would have created.
Welcome to the club of the smokers and car commuters. When they need to raise taxes that's who they go after. Need money? Lets raise the cigarette tax they can complain all they want because no one will sympathize with them. They should not be smoking to begin with. Same with the people who drive into the city...Raise the tolls! They should be using public transportation anyway. Can't put a gas guzzler tax on SUV's or pickups because everyone is using them and taxing them would put their re election in jeopardy. So who do they go after? Yep, big engine V8 gas guzzlers. They shouldn't be driving those kind of cars. I have to laugh when they say "well we want people to quit smoking, it's bad for you or "we want you to use mass transit to help with the environment. They tax these people not because they want to put an end to these things but because they know we will pay it. Simply put the gas guzzler tax is there because it's easy money for them.

You really need to read up on this tax that was enacted 42 years ago. it had nothing to do with the things you are saying.

Right, but is what I said true?
The amount of the tax can vary. Honestly, like most, I do not fully understand this tax. Back in the late 70’s there were hundreds of thousands of gas guzzlers and there were worldwide oil shortage. This is why the tax was enacted. And remember it was the manufacturer that was/is taxed. Passing it on to the consumer was not the governments intention, at the time.

it's gonna save "just one" child's life so it's all good. Remember to kiss the ring. :)
After how well the China flu lockdowns worked are you looking forward to our coming climate change lockdowns? Sorry fellas the gas guzzler tax failed to fix the ozone layer. Time to shut all the gas engines down until it’s safe!

That can only be true if the government officials that create taxes don’t have a basic understanding of economics......which they don’t lol

Come on, are you just espousing garbage to increase your post count. Not a word of this is true and has nothing to do with the tax that was enacted in 1978. Please stop your political BS so that this tread can continue.

Business both big and small get taxed on a myriad of things. Some are passed down and some are assimilated. The GG tax was enacted to get Detroit to make smaller, more fuel efficient cars (and it worked).

I have and what I said here stands, maybe

Maybe not in 1978 but it sure in Hell has to do with our cars now

Which Cars Are Subject to Gas Guzzler Tax?
The EPA published a list of new car models that were subject to the gas guzzler tax up until 2016. It has not published one since, but the 2016 list of gas guzzlers gives a sense of the kind of cars that are subject to the tax.

The majority are high-end luxury and sports cars, including models from Aston Martin, BMW, Ferrari, and Rolls-Royce. A few American muscle cars were on the list, too, including the Chevrolet Corvette and one iteration of the Ford Mustang.
I hear what you are saying and understand your point. But, The only mustangs effected are the Bullitt, Shelby's and now the Mach 1 M6. Us regular GT guys get our 460 HP monsters with no tax. Those that are buying these cars know up front what the deal is. If they are OK with it, and/or are willing to pay it so am I.

Agreed, that's kind of what I'm saying. We know what the costs are and we're willing to pay it. They know we're not gonna give up our cars, cigarettes etc... so it's money in the bank for them. I have already plunked down my $1000 guzzler tax on a new Mach.

Yes, it is. But hopefully you got your $1400 stimulus and you would still be $400 ahead.

By the way see you're in Bellmore. When I lived up North I used to go right through your town on my way to my Brother in Law in Massapequa. Nice place to live. Did you ever go to Sufiya's Grill on Merrick Road? Good place.

Since I had enough money to buy a Mach 1, I didn't qualify for the $1,400 stimulus. lol.
Haven't been to Sufiya's Grill, I'll check it out if it's still there.
