Honestly, no different than stop and go traffic. Let it run and don't worry. 30 minutes is nothing.

Add up all the minutes you spend idling a day. Your engine doesn't care if it's all at once, or 3 mins at a time.

The only thing wrong with letting it idle is the emissions it produces. I think you will find that if it sits and idles for 30 minutes without any throttle input the engine will shut down on on it's own. It even gives you a warning on the dash telling you it will shut off in, I think, 10 seconds. But that's purely an emissions thing not because it's harmful to the engine.

What's freaky to me are the cars that shut down at stop lights and restart as soon as you touch the gas.

Start/stop cars have additional battery tech. commensurate with the added stress of regularly starting and stopping engines.

I find that I turn my car off if I know I'll be sitting more than a few minutes as long as it's nice enough outside and I don't need the A/C.

The radiators and fans are sized for high ambient temperatures with no forced air coming through the front grille. As far as I know the radiators and fans could cool an idling car continuously. Underhood temperatures will increase dramatically, though, without the additional forced air to remove much of that heat.

guess my PP1 takes care of that.

Police let their cars idle their cars more than they run. Still many people desire those cars, so nothing wrong with that as long as you always do all of its maintenance on time

My way of doing it might be a bit old fashioned: It was accepted wisdom that if you are to be idling for forty-five seconds or more, the best compromise is to turn it off and restart when ready to move again.

I do that consistently in drive-throughs, but not usually in left-turn lanes or at other traffic signals.

Your starter wasnt designed to go through all these extra starts, puts lots of stress on starter and battery. I seen many cars with the engine shit off have starter failures at a very short life.

Yeah guess it’s not a big deal. Car will probably be fine. Just didn’t like sitting there for 30 minutes and burning up my gas... it was already low.

I left and filled her up for just under $25. I’ve been driving around around $100 a month vs, 200 I use to spend.

That, plus advances in engine management, might negate the wisdom of stop-restart protocols.

Do the cars designed to stop-restart have specialized starter and battery systems? Is there a chance of fitting such a system to Mustangs?

My observation is that my recent cars have started easily, not exhibiting much stress in re-start situations.

Yes and yes. Especially the starter. Don't know what is involved in retrofitting. My guess is it's too complex to bother with sensors and all.

Edit: In my opinion they suck in hot weather, car gets too hot inside at stoplights. Any time I have rented a car with it, I always disable it on first startup via the button on the dash.

Idling is a lot harder on DI engines, but fortunately, ours has BOTH, meaning port injection is what works at idle, preventing carbon build-up. In addition, our stupid batteries are comically small for our high-compression V8s; 330CCAs is just ridiculous. So unless you can have the long way home, I wouldn't do a lot of stop and go on this car for fear or getting stranded.
