I have a 2016 ecoboost with the base 4" unit in the dash, a couple of years ago I switched it out to a 8" unit with nav from moddication but it when it stopped working I put the ford base unit back in.

I would like to put some kind of other 8" unit in once again but see there are now a lot more options, really confused as to what to go with, want to retain the sync controls, add nav and add ability to play mp3s from usb stick of which the moddication could do all that.

I believe the 4" ford unit in my car is just plain old sync1 maybe sync2 not sure, can i get a unit that upgrades to sync3?

I don't have or use a smart phone which means I guess I don't need an android product?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Terry

Thread that he linked above will do it for you. If you have an iPhone or Android, you can plug it in and use Google or Apple Maps or Waze for navigation instead of getting a more expensive Nav APIM and get better navigation anyway.

Check out this thread, should answer most of your questions.

That's a long thread, and it evolved over time. Don't get bogged down in the parts about re-doing the connectors. The OP sells a harness that makes it a plug and play installation. He also sells complete kits so you don't have to source parts yourself. Just PM the OP for a quote. Not cheap, but lower than other Sync 3 kits out there.

wiring is different, you have a 4" Sync ( not Sync 1 just Sync ) Sync 2 is an 8" 2015 and I think 2016, then later 2016 got the Sync 3, The ECU needs as-built info changed for it to work and wiring, for either of them to be added to the car so, you never had an 8" working, might have powered up, but if you didn't reprogram the system to work with it and re-wire the harness you didn't have it working, so you either need to get your hands on the 2 wire diagrams and compare them to make your own or buy a wire harness. the few people who make the harness ( including the "its all in here ") do not post the info for the harness, either for monetary reasons or variation of harness reason, either way not worth working on making a 1 off harness since the $200 it will cost for a harness will save you time. Either get the parts you need or buy them all in a kit. you will Need a Bezel, Sync 3 APIM Module with Screen, The GPS antenna, the 2 Special USB cables, the Sat antenna and Maybe an ACM Radio if you want HD - on the cheap $1000 to $1200 - Kit is $1700 to $2400 depends on what you need

Thanks for the replies guys but I am even more confused now.

My moddication unit gave me a 8" touchscreen, navigation, climate controls the ability to play music videos along with mp3s from my usb stick still keeping most all the sync controls in tact and coming in at around $600.

Moddication doesnt make the unit anymore, I want something exactly the same in terms of both features and price but maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.

Once again, I don't own a smartphone, apple or android (whatever that is), so that might be hampering me.

Have to do the research on apple phones, android phones and sync3 among other things.

Any other suggestions still welcome.

I still have the moddication unit, the upgraded sync mod with nav, the bezel, wiring harness, 8" touchscreen etc, just dont know what part failed and have no way to find out.

Moddication has never answered any of my emails asking for help, which by now has to be over a year.

The Modification unit is marginally ok. I have it, I don't love it, but it's just ok. Moddication has HORRIBLE and I mean horrible customer service. Since you don't have a smart phone, that may change your options. Another "cheap" option is the Toptom unit, around $300ish if memory serves. I believe (not positive) that it has built in nav.

Yeah after doing some research I indeed decided to go with the Tomtop unit, ordered it about 6 days ago.
