Hi,

I really want to install some chambered mufflers on my GT. I much prefer the tone to a straight through type. Even the stock exhaust sounds pretty good, it’s just too quiet.

Only problem is, just about every chambered option available seems to suffer from some kind of drone, even with the stock resonator.

I had Flowmaster American Thunder axle back out on my last car and it would drone at precisely 1250rpm. I’ve heard the similarly designed steeda axle back has the same problem.

There is an option from Flowtech that, on the CJ’s video review seems like it might be okay, but I’m not 100% sure.

The other option I’ve considered is the BBK varitune, but again I’ve heard stories of drone and that they are very loud even with the valves fully closed.

Can anyone recommend a drone free chambered system?

One of my favorite combos on my 15 GT was cat delete and GT 500 axlebacks, had a muffler shop weld them in. Sound was amazing and ZERO drone!

Unfortunately, in the UK GT500 axle backs will be as rare as hens teeth!

Just say no to chambered mufflers with the Coyote. Drone city.

GT500 mufflers are sort of a chambered muffler (not quite to the extreme of say Flowmasters) and they don't drone. There's more to resonance and drone than just the basic design of a muffler.

I would say look at the system as a whole rather than focusing on a single part. That's how you end up with drone.

Well yes, but typically when people reference chambered mufflers they're referring to the old Flowmaster style, which are specifically branded as chambered. The stock mufflers are also chambered. It can be done.

The best mufflers I've heard in person for the deep tone without drone is AWE and Borla S-type. They are not chambered but definitely have a strong muscle tone. By all accounts the GT500 mufflers too.

Corsa mufflers are chambered and don’t drone. My MBRP Race mufflers are straight through and are drone city. I think there’s more to it than just chambered vs straight through.

Not true at all. They have a very unique way of constructing a 1/4 wave (Helmholtz) resonator built into the muffler, aka their RSC, but they are not chambered. The gas flow is straight through.

Straight through with just some fiberglass packing around a perforated tube (aka your MBRP, SLP LM2, the CJPP axleback, etc) is a sure way of getting drone as it keeps low frequency tones and cancels higher frequency. Borla, Corsa and many others kill the bass tones that resonate in the interiors of cars, leave the baritone and higher tones. The frequency content a muffler emits is the reason for drone or not.

Chambered is subjective and wide open to interpretation.

First the definition of “Chambered” needs to be defined.

I typically look at Flowmasters as Baffled Chamber by design.

CORSA, AWE, Gibson, MAC etc. have chambers without baffle plates impeding gas flow.

This isn't chambered. Everything in the muffler except the gas path is an acoustic resonator. Chambered = gas flow impediments or change.

So your going to be the one that defines chambered ?
Certainly not, but I'll happily call a spade a spade and also what isn't.

This is.

Baffle;
A device used to restrain the flow of a fluid, gas, or loose material or to prevent the spreading of sound or light in a particular direction.
Right out of the word book....

Ok? Yes I agree with the dictionary term of a baffle.
