3.55 gears make much difference over 3.31?

So the standard mustangs don’t have torsen, only the pp mustangs?
Funny the differential is the one muscle car feature that never seems to get much explanation from the manufacturer. In the past I’ve checked the box for torsen LSD just because it looked like a low-cost performance option that would be a pain to install later without even knowing fully what it did. I wish the eb had it as a stand-alone option.
I just checked Ford's website. For the 2018 the 3.55 Torsen is only available as an option for EcoBoost Mustangs equipped with the automatic. To get the 3.55 Torsen with the manual you have to purchase the Performance Pack. You can get a standard 3.55 limited slip without the Performance Pack, but not the Torsen.

Manufacturer option packaging is confusing.

3.31 and 3.55 are too close together to warrant an upgrade. Go with either 3.73 or 4.10 if doing an upgrade.

Yes, I agree 6th gear isn't usable in the 3.31 in normal driving. I had the 3.31 in my EBM and 6th gear felt good after 80 mph. But by 80 mph, you are in the danger zone.

What's the difference? I know the Torsen is "better" and more expensive...but I guess that if I'm even asking this question, I'm not the kind of person who's going to benefit from a Torsen vs. a standard limited slip diff

Also, on a practical note: in the EBM, 2015-2017 manual cars got a steel diff housing, while 2015-2017 automatic cars got an aluminum alloy housing.

The mechanical difference between the two is that the standard diff uses a clutch pack assembly to lock the left and right wheels while the Torsen uses a complicated gear mechanism.

The primary practical advantage of the Torsen is that it reacts to changes in differential traction faster and more positively than the standard diff. One major disadvantage of the standard diff is that the clutch pack will eventually wear such that it no longer functions, at which point you no longer have a limited-slip differential.

I can't tell you what the expected life of the clutch pack is, but I would imagine--like most other parts in the car--it will be dependent on how it's used.

I can only imagine a very specific set of circumstances where the more expensive Torsen diff would provide a significant advantage over the standard limited-slip for daily driving.

If you want the nitty gritty details watch these:

As a person driving a 3.55 equipped PP manual, I can state that 6th gear is just barely usable at 55 - 60. I join in with the others recommending 3.73 or stick with the 3.31. Just not that much difference between 3.31 and 3.55.

I recall TheLion went to 3.73s and loved it. But then he went to a 5.0 so....

I have a base EB and went with a 3.73 and I think its pretty much perfect.
I was not happy with a 3.31 and since I was swapping I went to 3.73 but I'm quite sure I would have been happy with a 3.55 if my car came with it.

6th gear is now usable and it feels more powerfull. (although I did the ford performance tune at the same time)

Thanks for the report. Can you give us an idea of what kind of fuel mileage you get?

I don't even have 2000km yet on mine, but this last tank I'm at 11.8l/100km (~20mpg) around half of that is city driving.
I could certainly do better if I tried ...

Sorry to hijack the thread,

But is the 3.31 faster 0-60 than a 3.55, or a 3.73?

What benefit do you get by going to 3.73 then? Are you just in the torque curve more often, rather than waiting?

For a GT, I loved driving the 3.73, but honestly in my Ecoboost (PP with 3.55, I for some reason wish I had a 3.31 or maybe lower due to the bounciness of the turbo).
