Yet there is ecoboosts dying left and right stock or modded. You really want to fire shots at the EJ Mr. Ecoboom owner?
We can go a few rounds if you want?

Notice how you don't hear anything about ecoboom anymore? Because it doesn't exist. Sure, a few people on this forum have blown their motors. But the few people on this forum versus how many on the road? Hmm... yeah. Made up term there bud.

That old EJ needs to be retired. Same old horsepower rating while everything else has passed it. Heck, wouldn't take much for the FA in the WRX to pass the superior trim. That same old EJ has gobs of turbo lag and gets piss poor fuel mileage. Where should we go from here?

Didn't the 2010 and newer needs the FPR upgrade like the 2015? I forget what caused the knock sensitivity for the modded guys, I do remember it though. I just remember there was a fix.:frusty:

The biggest issue is most people like the smaller turbos which are harder on the engine since it'd hit much harder down low and everyone lugged the engines. Plus All the people using OTS maps is a big NO. Also lack of an aos.. All my 500+hp engines were on gt35 turbos.
The fix must have come after my roo was long gone. It was disgusting to see a stock car pulling timing due to excessive knock. And this was on 93 octane.

You may not hear of any lately on here but I still hear about it. ;) At the moment there is still MORE ej engines on the road that ecoboost period. Most have no issues.

I think the EJ needs an overhaul, sure it is old. Anyone would be a fool to deny it. It definitely needs more power but it's fallen on deaf ears for years at Subaru, at least it seems that way with no power change. Of course it's not as fuel efficient it's old tech. That still doesn't change the fact you live in a glass house and are throwing stones. The ej is mostly a sound sturdy engine. Let's also mention the EJ has asthmatic heads yet flow better than your heads by a nice margin

I agree with it being retired on new STIs. It barely passes emissions, makes a sad amount of power in stock form, and has poop fuel economy. My average mileage on the 11 STI was about the same as a 2015-2017 Mustang GT.

Can't be that hard to make a FA20DIT a bit bigger and lower compression for high boost application like the Focus RS. I think around 360hp would be pretty sweet given how light the Imprezas are.

Yeah, I gotcha. But throwing stones from a glass house is just more fun. :headbonk:

When I said old junk motor, I was referring more to the age of it. It's been around since 2011 in its current form. That's a long time. It's severely outdated and in need of direct injection to compliment its port injection. Should help power and economy.

Most of the issues with the Ecoboost and the EJ stem from foolish people trying to tune them. Both motors in stock form are fine. But I don't believe in canned tunes. Each car is different and responds differently to changes. Data logging is a crucial step in setting up a tune for YOUR car. This not only will help you reach your power goals, but will do it with more reliability as well.

The 2008 - 2012+ STI EJ was not really fine in stock form. It had many issues based around the tuning and other factors. I hope the Ecoboost has a better track record.

Head gasket? Ringland failure? Spun a bearing?

They often had cracked ringland failure, but that wasn't really the core issue. The main issue was all the knock they experienced under load.

Me personally? Don't think I could step down 100 horsepower for basically the same money, and no convertible option.

They are different type of cars.
The WRX is lighter, and definitely better handling in stock form.
As for horsepower, when that turbo spool up, you feel huge amount of torque plus the gears are so close together.
