hello,
I picked up a used gt the other day and I didn't realize the car is not inspected. The dealership told me the car was originally from a different state and that I will have to get it inspected in a few days once I get my plates/reg/insurance cards. I am wondering why the dealership did not have the car inspected before selling it to me. Is it even legal for them to sell me the car uninspected?

The car has an exhaust on it, I'm not sure what type it is, it has mufflers on it but I can't tell if it has cats. The car also has tinted windows.

Do you think the dealership tried to get the car inspected and it failed because of the exhaust and or window tints? I asked them what happens if it fails and they said it is "guaranteed" to pass but I'm not so sure.

I live in NJ. It's not even legal to drive the car as it sits right now, which i have been doing the past two days.

I saw this online on another forum.

Any car sold by a dealer in the state of NJ carries the guarantee of passing state inspection. However, the car does not need to have a current inspection sticker. If the car has a valid NJ inspection sticker, it should be left alone and no inspection is necessary. If the car does not have a current NJ inspection sticker (chances are the dealer bought the car from another state) then you will get a pink card with your registration that gives you 14 days to get the car inspected. Take it to the inspection station and if you pass that's it. If it doesn't pass take the printout they give you and go back to the dealer who is required to make the necessary repairs and then you get the car re-inspected.

haha ... okay.

I don't live in Jersey anymore however,

1) As far as I know, a car being sold in jersey does not necessarily have to be inspected in jersey by the seller. There are plenty of cars from PA being sold in Jersey not having valid jersey inspections at the time of sale.

2) Does it have a MIL light? An exhaust by itself will not cause a car to fail inspection. However if it has a MIL, or is catless then yes it will fail. I have had 4 cars pass jersey inspections with exhausts on them.

3) State inspection doesn't look for tinted windows. they could care less. You may get approached by cops, however my experience has been good. Unless you are committing some other violation, the chance of you getting a ticket is very low. I've rocked cars with tints, without front plates and have not gotten ticketed. I got ticketed once for tints and that's because I was speeding heavily.

How long have you lived in jersey and had cars inspected?

You're the one to answer these questions, YOU live in N.J., YOU know the laws.

In many states nothing you're concerned about is an issue. And if it doesn't pass, I hope the "guaranteed to pass" from the dealership is in writing.

Ive been in NJ my whole life. My last car was brand new eco didn't need inspection ever. I was kinda hoping they would fail it for the tint just so I could make the dealer take them off. They are way to dark I can barely see out the back so either way it's coming off.
the car doesn't have and CEL or anything but the exhaust is pretty loud and I haven't been able to figure out which exhaust it is yet. I am new to the gt platform.
