Low Pitched Grinding Sound When Turning

My Car has 5k miles on it, not tracked, and I just serviced the rear diff with BG Fully Synthetic Fluid. I don't think servicing the diff will change anything. After seeing so many others with the same noise I'm thinking it's normal.

I stopped at the dealer and asked the SM and he said it's not uncommon to have a bit of clutch plate chatter in the diff when they are cold. Told me not to worry about it as long as it goes away after a few miles. But- it did not do it at all last winter...

Well after the service I think I can still hear it. If it is normal then why wouldn't I have heard it last winter when the car had 15k miles?

Does seem like a bunch of people are noticing it after their car is over a year old. My car never did it last year and only started after the weather got cold(er). It's never really cold here.

As parts wear together on a car they start making noise or different noises. Doesn't mean it's worn out or bad, it just means the new is worn off of it.
Doesn't a candy cane taste the same after the red is licked off?

Years ago I asked Honda about the noise my A/C compressor started making after 20,000 miles. It was a different and louder sound. Service manager told me to not worry, it was finally broken in. LOL!
Traded in the van with 200,000 miles and it still had that same compressor and still made the same noise.

My car does this too! If it's been sitting for a while, and I back out while turning sharply, sometimes it makes a fairly loud noise, almost like I've run over a small object. I'd describe the sound the sound as more of a clunk than a grinding noise though. My car is a performance package GT with 25k miles.

I think your car has a torsen LS which is mechanical instead of clutch plates. My friend's Suburu BRZ has a torsen and it is very clunky when cold making sharp turns. Pretty normal, I think.

In the 40's today and 20's tonight... definitely correlates with temp since it was much more noticeable and lasted longer before the noise went away. The whole driveline on this car makes me nervous- DL vibration, clunks between drive and rev, noisy diff, etc.

No, learned to drive in the family 69 LTD. At least 10 Mustangs including my 66 GT. But, first one in a while. I got used to import quality and this car is not that. However, this car is better than my 66

I know the feeling! I spent 17 years restoring my '66 GT Fastback and got my '15 about the time I was done. I've got one last project to do on it. Re-engineer the 4 link for a quieter ride and replace the center section since my used one I bought 15 years ago was bad.
I just have no interest at this time when I can have more fun in my new Mustang. It has sat untouched for a year and a half. :(

I have a 2016 v6 and i had the same exact issue. I noticed the issue back in September/October. It was a rubbing/humming sound coming from the back and I could only hear it when the car is cold and only on turns, but it did go away after few miles of driving. I could not live with it. I took it in last month and it was at the dealer for about a weak. It did need friction modifier and "the rear diff fluid was black with no friction modifier." They also checked the transmission fluid and found it was not filled to the correct level and it was the wrong fluid. The sound is gone. I have a 12K miles on it and I had it for a year. That was the fifth time that i took my car back to the dealer for an issue but that is a different thread :frusty:. I recommend that you take it in and have them fix it.

Yes, that's what the service staff told me. I asked if it affected my transmission and he said not at 12K miles.

I took it in one month after buying it for a shifting issue. It is really hard to shift from 1st to 2nd. It feels like I have to force it from 1 to 2. They said there was nothing wrong with it and i have to press the clutch all the way in. I told them that i was very grateful for the tip and they did enlighten me. After some research and reading posts on this forum, I learned about the MT-82 issues and that other people have similar issue. But after knowing about the transmission fluid I am wondering if that was the reason. I will drive it for couple of weeks it feels.

I have also noticed with mine, but I would've sworn it was coming from the front (I'll pay more attention to it now). Same situation, colder morning, pulling out with turned steering and hear the noise, goes away quickly after that.

Mine also comes from the front. I thought it was just tires losing traction or something (wouldnt make sense since im pulling out of driveway and turning).
