Is the GT350 ram inserted from inside of the PMAS airbox or is it just sit in front of it?

Some more pictures to help show it better but its actually flush and spot on:

- Here you can see the ram air duct sits a couple of mm within the PMAS heatshield and then to secure it in place I used cable ties. The fit is great and minimal gaps, if you want perfect you could put some black silicon sealant around it but I see no need, picture below taken from inside PMAS heatshield and second image of how the duct looks from outside heatshield:







- Here you can see how the 350 RAM air duct fits flush up against the car stock bumper ducting, again a near perfect fit with minimal gaps and again if you want a 100% seal then just put some duct tape around it, but again there is really no need.





- Finally a view from the front, you can see my opened up honey combs, velossa big mouth and then just ducting leading right to the PMAS heatshield and PMAS blue cone filter. So the filter is now getting a lot more fresh air directed to it compared to previously and at high speeds even a ram air effect.







Been for another drive this evening, a good hour with a mix of city and spirited driving and the results for IATs are very impressive:

- Highway and spirited driving is now only 2-3c above ambient, before it was 4-7c region.
- City driving without traffic is now 4-6c above ambient, stop at a stop light and it slowly increases to around 10c above ambient but takes longer whereas before it would quickly increase to 20c above ambient. Now when setting off from stop light the temperature falls back to 4-6 above ambient even with just light throttle. Before it took a lot longer and a lot of WOT to get back to lower temps though typical before IATs were always 10c area above ambient, so 4-6c above is nice.
- Heavy traffic, around 20-25c above ambient but it takes time, whereas without the 350 ram air duct it would quickly get to over 40c above ambient.


In short this $38 350 RAM air duct has not only lowered my IAT's considerably it is also helping to create RAM air effect just like Shelby cars have and though it might be placebo the car feels stronger. I say its well worth trying, you have nothing to lose except for $38 :)

Any questions just ask but it is a very easy and cheap modification and solves the PMAS issue of high IAT's and helps create a RAM air effect.

You see mine was previously opened up and I had the Velossa with stock intake which at speed would be 2-3c above ambient and 3-5c above at lower speeds. But the PMAS was 7-10 above ambient at speed once car was fully upto temperature and at lower speeds could very quickly go to 20c above and in traffic as much as 40c over, yes crazy. Though it would cool back down to 10c over once moving at speed again, it took ages to get back to that 3-5c range.

Now with the GT 350 duct it has vastly improved, just had a great drive out and the car felt more responsive and more powerful but also today is nearly 10c lower ambient, so IAT's are a good 15-20c lower and than my drives at weekend, which probably explains why it feels stronger. :)

Its one thing to do it in your own build thread (which you have). But its also another when Pmas has already expressed iat is unimportant at the difference we're seeing. Yet here you keep craming it down this threads throat when its been stated its unnecessary. If it was Pmas would have done it. You may feel you're being helpful here but its really just bothersome to the majority here. Stop it already, guy.

No, it's not. Don't be a snob....seems to be a lot of that around here. If you don't like it, then quit looking down your nose and move along. I actually prefer people that go out of their way to be helpful.

Dont be too sure on that. Its not sobbery. Its exactly what i said it is. If the intake really needed it, Nick at Pmas would have included it in the kit if it performed better with it. He already is putting out an intake that actually works. If people would stop trying to think they know better about how this works then a MAF company thats been dealing with air flow for a long time, we wouldnt have to have this conversation. But everyone thinks they are armchair engineers and specialist with flow benches. Dont misunderstand gibbo is a nice guy for sure. He likes to be helpful which is great. But his theories and opinion of bmw practices doesnt trump a company that only builds things for airflow. Lets come down from cloud nine here.

Irrelevant if the sensor is accurate or not that same sensor is now reading far lower. So if it was true what your saying I'd now be below ambient. Facts are that same sensor is now reading reduced IAT's, it is also that very sensor our ECU uses to determine timing advance and retard, if it reads 38c then timing is pulled, which before my modification it was doing. This can also be backed up by datalogs and tuners such as Lund, JDM will tell you the same. Lets also remember the lower the IAT and CHT temperatures the ECU then also advances timing to take advantage, lower temperatures are a good thing. If PMAS or anyone else tried to say otherwise they would be the laughing stock, the critical point is if you can reduce your IAT's without restricting flow and as the GT350 duct is actually larger and helps force a lot more air to the intake I am confident if anything flow has being marginally improved.

If anything it is you cluttering the thread trying to shoot other members down, you need to get down from your high horse buddy, if we merely accepted what manufacturers give us as being the absolute best possible then why would we ever modify our stock cars in the first place?

I work for an electronics company and we have temperature probes I've used our own probes and they confirm within 2c the readings I was seeing on car sensors. So all this about the sensors not being accurate, well on my car the ambient temperature reported is within a couple of degrees and by placing a sensor probe inside the maf tube also pretty much matched the IAT's reported by the maf sensor. I've also connected up the laptop to verify the IAT reported on the dash is matching that reported to the ECU, its a match.

Facts are are my IAT's have reduced whether or not it's a benefit who knows but it's not hindering anything and this is a forum where members share stuff to try and help each other. When people like you try to silence others because your disagree with their opinion that is extremely narrow minded. If your happy with your PMAS (do you own one?) then great for you, enjoy it, I was happy with mine but at the same time wanted to reduce my IAT's and I have accomplished this.

True but before there was no fresh air getting into the PMAS heatshield and around its cone filter, so when power was applied it just sucked warm air in, engine hot air.

Now with the ducting the PMAS not only has cold air being directed at it, but the air is being force directly at the cone filter and as you drive faster even more air is directed and it is cold air, so now there is a lot more air availability.

A simple test, take a smoke machine and an air blower, put your smoke machine at the grill entrance and blow the smoke through and it will just fill the entire engine bay as it is not being directed anywhere, now with the ducting that smoke is all entering the PMAS heatshield and hitting the cone filter hard.

Its not a sealed air box so true ram air effect won't happen but now the filter is getting air rammed down its throat which is why the IAT's are dropping right back down so much quicker even without the need to go heavy on the throttle simply because fresh air is hitting the cone filter from just the cars momentum.

That's why I cut the opening on my box bigger to possibly allow more airflow to the filter. I figured it couldn't hurt anything. Everything else about the intake is huge except the inlet hole to the box I felt it needed to be bigger to match everything else.

PMAS actually suggested that. But they were adamant that the flow was worth more than was lost in IATs. I don't have a temp issue. I'm ambient going down the road (correcting for the 4* offset) with the front of my box opened up.

PMAS specifically stated that ANY funneling of air into the box restricted flow, which ultimately hurt more than the gain in lower temps.

With the PMAS I'm not having any issues hitting a full 30* of timing in the hottest of summer air and E85 while driving.

It's on the list but I have a phantom P0300 with no symptoms that won't go away since the OPG/Clutch/Header install.

Even after 3 crank relearns. Only shows up on the highway.

That's annoying. Random misfire codes are a pain to diagnose.

I am running the Lethal grill delete and no BOX or funnel for my PMAS and I am still seeing 30* of timing on E85 on a 90* day with 96* inlet temps. Less weight, lots of air flow to filter at speed. Just my experience.

Congrats for being below ambient? Others are too without the 350 or gt duct. The issue is this duct isnt needed. You dont know better then pmas. To pretend to is sophistry at best. Pmas has said multiple times and myself along with others that it reduces flow. The only thing pmas has said to do is open the box inlet. The piping up to it is the choking part.

So unless you are concerned about racing in bumper to bumper traffic iat worrying is a waste a time. Amount of air trumps temps up to 108. Its really that simple. Im far from cluttering the thread. Im repeating facts to you from pmas. You are posting opinions and theory which means absolutely nothing, that in fact is clutter. Im not on a high horse.

I most definitely feel your intentions are in the right place but leading people to a path of restricting part of the point of this intake is a problem and ill continue to speak up when i see you do it in a thread that isnt your build thread. Your sensors are most likely not automotive applications and can not be treated as law. They cannot be treated as accurate just because you say so. I dont doubt in your local conditions you decreased your iat temp. You have restricted your flow for iat temps. That isnt debatable. Pmas tested this with a bench. You have not nor can you. Like i said all you have is opinions and theory. Also as i said flow trumps iat temp up to 108 degrees. I have zero reasons to ignore you. Like i said you're a nice guy, but your spreading partial misinformation around which isnt okay. If you're getting offended by my posts you are adding tone to text that isnt there thats your hangup. I haven't called you names nor personally attacked you.

I agree with above, but 108* is where it starts pulling. It interpolates up to about 150* where it pulls a full 5*. Or stops it from adding.
