So I just bought a new GT PP last week, and I've been reading about painting the coil and engine covers. I'm not thinking about sanding and wet sanding and all that, so it all sounds pretty easy....right up until you try to paint the letters.

So I started thinking that perhaps it would be easy to combine high heat engine enamel and plasti-dip.

For instance, paint the entire coil cover with a couple coats of paint and let cure. Then coat the entire coil cover with plasti-dip, and peel it out of the letters leaving the letters with the paint color and the rest the dip color.

Or paint the coil cover, and plasti-dip the letters, then peel it off the surrounding areas. This would leave the covers the paint color with the letters the dip color.

I've dipped emblems before, but I haven't done anything besides that and don't have enough experience to know if this will work.

It sure does sound a lot easier than masking off letters or wiping excess paint off...

i taped over the letters and then traced letters out with a utility knife. it took alot of patience but I was super pleased how it came out almost perfect.

Question.

I am in the process of painting my coil covers, is it OK to drive the car without the coil covers installed?

Reason for asking is I am waiting for the paint to cure as I am painting the letters a different color and it will take a few days...

Thanks

Yes, they don't do anything. I drove around without mine for months.

Khyber how did you disassemble the engine cover?

I'll be doing my coil covers tomorrow and tuesday, I'll try taking some pictures of the steps along the way. Steps I plan to use:
VHT engine primer entire coil cover.
VHT satin black on letters and stripes.
Tape off stripes, and fill letters with water.
Spray entire coil cover in ford blue.
Dump out water, remove tape from stripes, and dry cover.
VHT Engine Clear entire cover.

Thats what I did as well - tried the method in the video (using airbrush thinner to wipe away overspray) and it did not work AT ALL.

Tape and patients and mine are virtually perfect. :headbang:

i didnt use any primer .. i used bulldog adhesion promoter, 2 dustings coats then you can either prime or just go straight to color ... have to use some kind of adhesion promoter cause there plastic .the vht stuff is good to use cause of the heat

I decided not to paint the lettering on mine at this time. I may do it later, but it just looks clean right now to my eyes. I didn't add enough pigment to the mix when doing the cover, so I am going to respray it in the coming days because it seems a bit more cream than the coil covers are.
