Been going back and forth on a catted downpipe and had a couple of questions:

Do some downpipes have a better Catt in them than others? I realize a high flow is a main point of one, but do some have a 400 cell vs a 200?

Smoke was an issue with early 2015 mustangs, does anyone have a 2016 with a DP?

Also interested in sound difference as well.

Thanks....

I'm just speculating, but I guess the newer models with the revised pcv would have fixed the smoking issue so I'm guessing it wouldn't have much issue with a dp swap

Is it crankcase pressure that causes the smoke?

Can you run a catted down pipe without a tune?

You can, but I wouldn't. You will probably run into an over-boost condition as the turbo will make more boost than stock and spool faster. The Cobb stage 1 ots ran mine fine with a cat less pipe until I got my custom tune.

Do you have an upgraded intercooler? Do not use the down pipe without doing the IC first. The stock one will not provide adequate cooling at the increased boost.

Not a fantastic idea. Giving the turbine more power without modifying the wastegate duty cycle tables means that the throttle body has to start closing to prevent overboost. It's not as fast as the wastegate and if it doesn't respond, there goes your last layer of protection.

Personally I'm buying a catless and welding in a 400 cell. IMO the difference between 400 and 200 isn't much, most stock cats are around 900.

Hi Glenn,

Yeah, I am slowly catching up to your list of mods. Currently installed are:

MAP Intercooler
MAP Cat back exhaust
JLT CAI
Denso Plugs

Wondering if I could run Cobb Stage 1 for a while without harm to my car. I know OTS tunes are frowned upon so been thinking of my final setup.

Thanks, no one seems to know what the vendors catts are. I'd prefer 400 simply thinking less smell and better odds of passing emissions. If you end up making your own dp, post your build of it. I might be interested in going that route...

With the downpipe you can run the Cobb stage 3 OTS with no problems. I ran the stage 1 with full bolt ons for about 2 weeks with no issues at all. The Cobb OTS maps are on the conservative side and safe to run untill you are ready for your custom tune. They leave a bigger safety margin to allow for car to car variations so you just will not be at full potential. That's really the only downside.

I'm not sure the difference between different brands but Adam say krona and full race are 2 of the better brands and Brew city can give you a really good deal on a catted down pipe. I got mine through them and I'm real happy with it

Yeah that is one of the things holding me back on a downpipe. That and driving it without tune to the dealership if I need to.

Power increase and a little meaner exhaust note is really nice though. I have a 2016 so I don't think I have the first pcv but not sure if I have the latest one.
