I intended to mod my ecoboost with an intercooler, cold air intake and unleased custom tune, is an exhaust upgrade of some kind needed?

I prefer to keep the car quiet (stock exhuast) but is this counterproductive if I put in the mods mentioned above?

If a exhaust upgrade is needed can I just go with an axle-back system or would a need a full cat back system?, keeping in mind I don't want the exhaust loud.

Thanks
Terry

You will not need an aftermarket exhaust. The downpipe is the most restrictive part of the exhaust and that's all I have replaced on my exhaust. An axel back or catback is mostly for sound not much gains to be had from that part of the exhaust.

Does a downpipe do anything to the exhaust sound?

Also well the cold air intake change the sound of the car?

Thanks

Joe is pretty much right. Only reason for you to upgrade your exhaust is because the better your car can push the gases out, the faster the turbo can spool. So it looks like your helping the mustang inhale better, the exhaust would be a better exhale. There are many exhausts out there that aren't over the top. Mishimoto comes to mind as one of the quieter or more "stock" sounding exhausts.

So really, in order to see the best results from your planned mods, and exhaust would help, but it is not necessary.

The intake WILL change the sound. How much will depend on the system you decide to buy. I have the FFTEC one and its LOUD.

My catless downpipe made it so I could hear my turbo more that's about it. Only certain air intakes you can hear like the aluminum tube ones..you can hear them sucking in air and hear the blow off valve sound through the tube, the ones like the airaid you will probably only hear under WOT.

one more question, is there any particular order that I should be doing these mods in?

cold air intake
unleashed custom tune
downpipe
intercooler
oil separator

Please excuse all these questions, I am a novice at all this and just want to make sure I am doing things the correct way.

Thanks
Terry

My order would be

Tune
Intercooler
Oil separator
Downpipe
Intake

Should really get an intercooler at the same time as a tune as they go well together but a tune can come first just need to be re-adjusted after the intercooler.

When you say oil separator, u mean catch can right? You need to throw in a wastegate somewhere in there and the BMR cradle lockout. You can have all those great bolt ons, but if you can't put power down to the ground and have severe wheelhop...

Downpipe makes the exhaust really loud

I would do these in this order:

oil separator = safety item for your engine, done first regardless of others
intercooler = before tune as it will change what the tune can offer.
custom tune = the tune will make the majority of the difference
downpipe = will make some difference and increase sound, less if cattted. Do this with or before tune if you only get 1 tune.
cold air intake = almost no difference, done mostly for intake sound.
catback exhaust = almost no difference, done for sound.

id recommend this order:

catch can
Intercooler
Downpipe
tune
meth
tune
Intake, catbak, bov, and other noise makers can come last or whenever really.

theres also the questions of suspension mods too, or are you just looking for power right now?

I recommend this path for the more basic bolt-ons (a lot of people are weary about meth kits and installing them):

Catch can & colder plugs
Intercooler
Tune
WGA
Cat-back
Downpipe
Charge pipes and upgraded BOV
Intake
