Reasonable price for axle-back install?

I have called 3 different local muffler shops (Central FL), and they all quoted me $150. That seems ridiculous for 2 cuts, 4 welds (pipe + tips), and sliding the mufflers on/off the hangars.

The book rate must be 1.5 hours or so, which I also don't believe.

What have others paid?

Just go to a DIY place and pay 15$ for the hour and they'll cut it for you where I went. cost me 14$ total for my x pipe install, paid about 120 for my roush axle back and didn't even have them weld it

That's a lot. I paid a muffler shop $40 to install my flowmaster outlaw axlebacks with some welding. It only took him 15-20 minutes to do.

Just go to a DIY place and pay 15$ for the hour and they'll cut it for you where I went. cost me 14$ total for my x pipe install, paid about 120 for my roush axle back and didn't even have them weld it

Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by "DIY place"?

I mean, honestly, if I could get someone to just measure properly and do the two cuts per instructions, I could take care of the rest of the install myself (with included clamps). I'm just worried I won't cut straight lines with a sawzall, and the slip-fit pipes won't fit.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Outlaws are probably about the same length and weight as the SLP LM2 (Roush clones) I bought. I had my mind set on $80-100 MAX, and now I'm hearing $150. A 15-20 minute job, and they're charging for 1.5 hours labor???

If the SLP Loudmouth 2's end up being an exact Roush clone, at the $375 I paid for them, the extra cash for the install almost kills the difference.

Agree, way high. I also paid $40.00 at a small muffler shop to cut the necks off my stock V6 auto mufflers & cut necks off take GT mufflers & well on V6 necks & mount. Took about 30 minutes.
Shop around.

Thanks. Yep, now that I've read these replies, I'll definitely be shopping around, even if I have to go to the next county over. What I find funny is that 2 of these 3 shops, were only going to ask $250 to do a custom x-pipe AND the mufflers, but I decided on just the A/B's for now. The math doesn't add up. You can't even buy a prefab x-pipe for the difference.

What is wrong with exhaust shops??? I called 10 more (13 total) exhaust shops, starting at about 9AM. Most either told me... "oh, our exhaust guy doesn't work Wednesdays", "if it doesn't bolt on, I don't want to touch it", or "I can't do it today, but I can look at it". This all after I explained what the job would be. It's like no one wants to take a risk cutting a pipe. These are all shops with "exhaust", or "muffler" in their names.

I found one shop that was doing a custom true dual setup for a customer, and wouldn't have time today. He also quoted me $100, so he's the cheapest I've asked. I'll probably go with him but my schedule the rest of the week (9 hour days) won't allow time for the install. Wish I'd called them first.

Well Why would you weld them when they come with free mcFree clamps, 2 its seems right considering welds are 25.00 a piece 25 multiplied by 4 is 100 and 50 for labor to put it on. shouldn't take but an hr.

If you piece it out like that, the price makes sense. But priced out hourly, 15-20 minutes work for 1.5 hours billed labor does not.
If I was cutting it myself I would have had no problems using the clamps. But I have read of several rattles/vibrations with clamps, where people had to go back to the exhaust shop and end up paying for welds anyway. Regardless of the pricing breakdown, I doubt a shop would charge me less if i ask them to make the cuts and clamp everything with included clamps.

I brought them my h-pipe and separate axlebacks and $150 was the out the door price to install them both on my car.

My cuts were no where near the straightest, no leaks no fitment issues and I also did not file the edges because I had no file.

Paid 160 to get my mufflers cut off, pipes bent and welded and two stainless steel 4 inch tips, also paid 150 at another shop to get my h-pipe made and installed, very good work too. So 150 for just install is a no go.

It's funny how the cheapest quotes are coming from California, which I've always associated with being more expensive.

Was this a national chain, or a "Jim bobs discount exhaust"?


Maybe I need to find the guy that works out of the back of his trailer but has a lift in his front yard.
