Ford/GM 10-speed Automatic Transmission

Anyone remember the Ford AXOD transaxle, the last transmission project that Ford bought lock, stock, and barrel from GM? ;) Hurt Ford's reputation with the Consumer Reports crowd a lot...even though the fix for the tranny's problems was simple (all it required was an extra oil passage on one particular part, you just drilled the hole in with a drill press when you had the guts opened up). Tauruses, Sables, Contientals, and Windstars experienced transmission failures by the boatload, though, and made for really bad press for Ford :doh:

Even with the fix in place, the transmission suffered a familiar problem to anyone who's ever owned a high mileage GM vehicle with an automatic: band failure (because GM favors a smooth shift over transmission life in their automatics).

It's the same one from the Raptor, so yes, it's the joint developed 10 speed. GM shitheads are trying to claim it's ALL GM that did it and completely neglecting to mention Ford's involvement. Some articles are pointing it out, but naturally the fanatics over at Camaro6 are mostly ignoring that.

I expect this in the 2018 MY Mustang along with the GT500 or whatever they call the next highest Mustang.

Lol they actually split up the development where Ford took the lead on the 10 speed RWD transmission, and GM took the lead on the FWD 9 speed. So the 10 speed is basically just a Ford transmission.

This transmission is of Ford Motor Company's own in-house design, with Ford filing the design patents. Ford will let GM use the 10-speed transmission as part of their joint venture agreement. Watch the ZL1 video. Watch Reuss's fingers when he pulls the paddle. The thing shifts instantaneously. There is zero lag whatsoever. Gm and Ford did an excellent job with this transmission. I am surprised GM will have it on the road first though.

Despite sharing development with Ford, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 features unique calibrations and hardware specifically designed and engineered for the high-performance Camaro. In addition to the 2017 Camaro ZL1, GM stated it will introduce the 10-speed unit on eight vehicle models by 2018.

It looks as if each manufacturer will have their own tuning which in turn could make the transmissions totally different in performance.

Agreed...especially since Ford did the main work on the 10 speed. You'd think they'd want that in the Mustang before the Camaro.

What on earth would you do with paddle shifters with 10-speeds? I like autos with paddle shifters, giving me the benefits of changing my own gears without having to deal with a clutch (or the MT-82 POS transmission I have), but 10 gears? Spare me... I'd rather have a beefy CVT then that imitates whatever gearing ratios I feel like having that day.

If it's heavier (which I don't know how it couldn't be), that might negate some of the positive aspects ;) I know automatic transmissions lost a lot of weight when the casings went from cast iron/cast steel to cast aluminum, and they lost even more weight when the tranny controls went from being a hydraulic nightmare with vacuum inputs to electronic and seamlessly integrated with the engine ECM...I'd be curious to know what this 10 speed wunderbox weighs compared to the 6R80

Weight is a good question. The zf 8spd weighs less than the earlier zf 6spd the auto's are based on, pretty cool.

The 10 speed could be good if they choose a good close ratio. 3 over drive gears seem overkill but you do have 10 speed so I guess its not gonna be an issue.
I would love to drive something with many gears. I like the sound of autos changing gear.

I like the idea of three overdrive gears, it would be nice to go 85 and cruise at 1300 rpm's. Granted I would never get an auto in a sports car but I would love that in my next truck.

DCTs are more expensive, have more maintenance, low speed smoothness issues vs a fast torque converter transmission. Fast auto is is good enough for 99% of the people out there who dont need bleeding edge.

It almost sounds DCT like (speed wise), especially the jolt you can see in the cabin.

The fact it's brand new will surely mean its better in every way compared to the 6R80, guess one of the big questions though is if it's just as reliable.
