Anyone remember the Ford AXOD transaxle, the last transmission project that Ford bought lock, stock, and barrel from GM? ;) Hurt Ford's reputation with the Consumer Reports crowd a lot...even though the fix for the tranny's problems was simple (all it required was an extra oil passage on one particular part, you just drilled the hole in with a drill press when you had the guts opened up). Tauruses, Sables, Contientals, and Windstars experienced transmission failures by the boatload, though, and made for really bad press for Ford
Even with the fix in place, the transmission suffered a familiar problem to anyone who's ever owned a high mileage GM vehicle with an automatic: band failure (because GM favors a smooth shift over transmission life in their automatics).
